Starter motor clutch

Gday guys when i removed my starter motor, i left everything else in place {new engine oil}. I am going to need to change the oil in 2 or 3 rides. This will be my chance to open up the engine, and have abit of a play. The Karc is on my hit list. Here is the thing i am not 100% sure about, can i remove the starter motor clutch from the rotor, remove the starter motor clutch ring gear , and the big washers {spacers}. Then all i will put back on the crank is the rotor, key, and rotor bolt. Does the rotor press fit so far onto the crank, and then stop because the crank becomes to wide for the rotor to go on any further {like a old 2 stroke} i think it should work like this, the 84 klr600 didn't have a starter motor, so it wouldn't of had the ring gear, or does it but up on the ring gear which in turn buts up on the bearing. The reason i want to remove it if i can, is that it will help the motor spin up faster, and i am going sand dune riding soon. Thanks guys Cheers Peter.

peter- having just been in there last night, my answer is 'yes'. The rotor is on a taper, held by the rotor bolt. it only goes on so far. That said, I don't know that the motor will spin up faster. The ring gear runs on a roller bearing clutch off the back of the rotor. It can drive the rotor/crank, but not vice versa. Removing it and the two gear sets will get some now-useless bits and weight out, though. T

Hi Peter, I might have missed it but how are you making out kicking the beast, not too bad?

Gday guys Tom thanks for that, i will pull all that starter stuff out next oil change. I was hoping i could get the clutch thing off the back of the rotor, to make it lighter, i will have a look when i have it apart.
Stew kicking it is super easy, to easy in a way. I have trouble trying to not kick it to hard. You have to kick it like your kicking a 125, i just can't get my head around it being so easy. I am going to unhook the Karc so it feels like i am kicking a thumper. My 13 year old can start it, he is about 4 foot 6. Cheers Peter

Oops, I thought you had already unhooked the compression release and I was curious on how hard it was to kick

Stew soon as i do, i will post up the results. A few times i have gone to kick it, and the Karc has not worked. Feels like the motor is locked up, then it starts to turn. I think that is because i am kicking , with about 25% of the power i could kick it with. I think about a 75% kick will spin it over enough to start. But i could be very wrong, and it might just send me flying .
