Anyone have any suggestions for a HID conversion?

HID lights don't seem to work well with the factory reflectors. They are incredibly bright but they need a special reflector to create the same beam pattern as a stock halogen bulb.

There are quite a few LED bulbs on the market. I'm sure that performance varies between each one.

Here's some pics of a $20 H4 LED bulb I bought on ebay. It has worked flawlessly for a year.

1X 4000LM 40W Motorcycle Bike CREE LED Headlight H4 9003 HB2 Hi & Lo 6000K Bulb | eBay

Stock bulb low beam (1500 Lms)

4,000 LMs LED low beam

Stock bulb high beam

4,000 Lms LED high beam

There are LED bulbs available that put out 6,000 LMs or more, but at some point you have to worry about blinding oncoming drivers.

Install was easy, BUT.. this was in a GEN1 KLR (1988-2007) that uses a single H4 bulb. Your GEN2 (2008-current) uses 2 separate H7 bulbs.

For less than $10, I'd try these and see if you like them,

2x High Power H7 6000K Cree LED 15 SMD 40W 4000LM Driving DRL Light | eBay

edit> those 2 bulbs are 20 watts and 2,000 Lms each, compared to the stock bulbs 55 watts/1500 LMS ea.
if you want SUPER bright, you might look for bulbs that are 30 watts/3,000 LMs each.

I can't guarantee that these cheap bulbs will perform well, but I've bought a dozen different LED bulbs from Ebay and been happy with every one.
