No, just refuse from other sites looking for more drama.

This is cool, only one post and I have one of the highest post counts already.

Hey Biker Scout, now my post count is twice as many as yours.

Can I get rep points for that?

I'm just poking fun.

Hey, good time to start an election for moderators. I'm near Chicago so I get to vote twice. It's the law.

My credentials.

I own a KLR650
I am a lunatic, but in a kinder, gentler way.
I smoked weed once but I didn't inhale (thanks Willy!)
I can spel reel good.

Vote for me.

Why do we need moderators already?

A moderator is like a carburetor. The difference is they atomize words to make them a combustible mixture.

Oh you know.. the usual. ;-)

Been battling computer hardware problems for the last week, but I think I've got eveything up to snuff now. Dang, when computers go on the fritz doesn't it always seem like it happens to multiple components?

Just got the G5 back up and a new monitor that got fried from the spike (thought I had surge protectors, but they turned out to be just glorified power strips DOH!)

Now, my Powerbook is barely limping along.

Luckily, the strom is running just fine (reaches over and knocks on wood)

Well, I do some video editing and motion graphics from time to time.. so having faster machines improves my take home on jobs.

Yeah, at the moment.. the strom is just perfect for a non-wrencher like myself. Even though I'm not fond of Kawasaki's warranty service, I have to admit that new Connie looks pretty sweet. Not sure what to think about the new KLR though. Seems like after so many years, the upgrades would have been more radical. But, from a business standpoint they probably have to walk a fine line in keeping that loyal following they've developed... so they probably had to keep it pretty close to the original, without creating and entirely different bike.

Personally, I'd really like to see an affordable DS in the 800cc variety with at least 2 cylinders. Now that I'd have to take a serious look at.

Gotta run and reroute all my stuff to the new heavy-duty surge protector I just bought before I fry everything again.

Catcha later!

No, it happened while I was down at South Padre Island a week ago. But, this particular quadrant of my house I believe has some dirty voltage or a ground problem. I've had two different electrician's out, but they can never find anything wrong. I didn't sweat it, because I thought I was running surge protectors I'd had a long time... but it turned out they were nothing more than glorified power strips.

At least I didn't lose a logic board or any drives. Just cost me a little cash for a new supply and the monitor that got zapped was just a cheap LCD I only use for tools.. so that didn't cost much to replace either.

That does sound enticing.. but as you know.. not much of a wrencher.. I've heard horror stories about BMW's warranty support too... and I don't make the kind of bank to pay BMW mechanics for service.. So for me, I'll have to wait until one of the Asian knock-offs. ;-)

the bike is appealing to me because it uses a rotax motor(bulletproof), and either a belt or chain drive. if they let you opt out of the abs it could be the perfect bike.

you're already riding the knock-off  . stay with what works for ya.

I'm not getting into any farther than to say that I'd exchanged thoughts with Glenn a couple times, and was close to calling it a day a while back. Today was enough. I've left a clean slate, and removed as much of me as I was allowed. What's done is done..

So, anyway, did you go to Port Washington for the BMW Rally? :D

Paper,

There are a couple threads started about you leaving the (old) site. One in Off-Topic, another started in the Moderators forum. You will be missed. For reasons only known to you and I can respect that. I hope you can put your differences with Glenn aside, and return.

I didn't make the Port Washington rally, because after I packed up my bike, and printed out the directions, I learned it was Friday night and not Saturday as I origionally thought. I even invited Ben Jefferson along and felt pretty crappy about backing out at the last minute because he was going in for surgery and wanted to get some riding in that weekend.

I've spoken to him since, and he's doing okay. Not much more riding for him this year however. I went to an Airshow that weekend instead, and even did a Ride Report that I posted at advrider.com. I'm not much for Ride Reports, but here it is if you want to see it. -

Sorry to hear that. That site really needs people like you. But, at least you got to wipe the slate clean before you left. I wasn't as fortunate. ;-)

Where are you out of? I'm thinking of riding with this guy I met who's on a KTM950. He'd followed some of my writing in Mexico during the KLR days, and we've been meeting and plotting out a potential Mexican trip toward the end of October. The guy seems pretty cool so far, but in conversation last night at a cafe... he let on that he was an Evangelical. Uh-oh!

I've nothing against Evangelicals.. but if you knew me, you'd think my traveling in Mexico with one would be odd. Then I thought, hey... this could be kinda interesting. From my writings, he's aware of what I do down there.. and he seemed cool with it... as long as we keep the Sabath and not ride on Saturdays. I'm not sure I understand this reasoning, etc. But I've got an open mind, and might just go for it.

I also got one from Glenn, and I have zero hard feelings for Glenn. He's running HIS site as he wishes, and I support his right to do that, as I hope he supports my decision to not be a part of it anymore. Done, and don't wanna talk about it anymore..

I wanted to just delete them all, but you can't. You also can't leave less than 4 characters. I thought a while and Goodbye seemed as polite as possible. I was limited to the last 500 posts, too, and I had 1700 or so..

When I was moderator at Dirtbike.com (I was a global moderator), I could delete a user and it deleted the user and all posts that he had made. It was saved for an absolute last resort for trouble makers that refused to listen to reason, and it was used only a couple times when I was there. I'd have given anything for that button to just delete and be gone, so what I did was as close to that as possible.

Oh, and I changed every single post that I could, except one, and it was a comment towards my least favorite moderator there..

Glad to see a quorum being establisehed here. I too had an issue with the "other" board owner a year or so ago and was banned for a while. After things were settled and I was admitted back I decided to play it safe and mostly just lurk. There is a ton of good info and knowledge there, but it stinks that a few people can just come in and ruin it for the others.

Does anyone know KLR650 (the owner of this forum) and his ambitions? I'd hate to see a bunch of people migrate here and it turn into the same mess. I'm fortunate to me a moderator on another board (not motorcycle related) that has a fantastic owner with good values. He is strongly commited to a family friendly environment and although we occassionally have issues to deal with (including banning a mod at one point) things run pretty smoothly. It seems that it is always the political or sex issues in some forum not related to the core board topic that ends up bleeding into the other forums that cause the issues.

Hope things stay peaceful here and we can all stay on topic

Well from reading some of his recent posts and from the "disclaimer" that popped up when you register, I'd say he has just what you're talking about in mind. But I also seem to remember reading something like that when I signed up on the .net board. Hopefully this one will actually enforce those rules. That was my biggest gripe with the other board. Not so much the posting of a particular image, but the fact that the individual that did it was evidently "above the law" (and that wasn't the first time either).

ARGH!!! No more of that.

Well, howdeedoo! This is where all the new action is, huh? Hey fellers! It's nice to see a new forum getting started. I like klr650.net and all, but I'm sure quite a few of you feel like I do: tired of some of the BS & not always very fond of the way it is run...I know there are other reasons too, with some iffy things going on over there lately. That's about all I'll going to say about that, though. I'm not here to talk trash about Glenn or his site. He works hard to do it the way he thinks it should be done. Can't please everyone and all that. I just want to have a good time and check out the fresh new klr650 spot!

See you round boys (& girls if we got any!) :D

You've hit it on the head, and NOBODY has pointed a finger at Glenn.. I completely respect his right to run his site as he feels, and it's a FANTASTIC site!!! I'd just had enough of a few aspects and a few people, and opportunity knocked here and we've all taken a good look, and most like what they've found.. It might not bet "better" but it's a little different.. :D

My guess is that we're all just a little to hard headed, and too old to change..

I've been riding for 20 years, but I'm a newbie to the whole off-road riding scene. I joined Glenn's site for information while I try to figure out if I want to buy a KLR 650 (that decision has been made, now just waiting for cash). That was the first computer forum I had ever joined -- never had the time nor interest before. It was and is a wonderful spring of information; however, after I posted a technical thread on the aerodynamics of the KLR I got personally attacked for absolutely no conceivable reason by one person. I was actually directly insulted by being called all sorts of names like we were on a grade school playground or something. None of the moderators stepped in to shut down this guy who couldn't act like an adult, and it was starting to look like I was getting sucked down the hash slinging road (someplace I never go). I hope all of us that have joined this site can continue with the positive attitude I've seen already. Stirring the pot is one thing, but the outright attacks on people are starting to get to me on the other site. I figure you are an adult if you can legally ride a KLR, so you should act like an adult and be courteous to fellow riders even if you disagree with them over something.

Alright, enough whining! Glad to find even more information on the KLR 650!

Glenn... I don't have any "intentions" but when people started freaking out and getting really pissed off at what was going down over certain content posted and moderators not conducting themselves properly, I mearly suggested that there was another site out there that could offer a new begining for those who didn't wish to participate in the forum anymore.

Biker; to keep it fair. I have wittnessed some mods doing the right thing over there. you cant garauntee that all the mods check every little detail on the big site. thats why I like the button her, to report a post. it then goes straight to the mod and admin.

Glen: lets not bring what was happening over there, here. I am to here to take a break. I don't like being called negative out of context. But I know most people would agree, that the moderators on board were not moderatering. They were "allowing" things to continue to run their course irregardless of an overwhelming voice of opposition.

I've got nothing against Glenn personally. I just made assumptions like everyone else I guess. But the whole not being upfront about touchy subjects really doesn't sit well with me. Ask any new member and they'll tell you the same thing, there was some kind of negativeity vibe going on over there and a lot of insider information that made certain topics feel weird. Stuff only regulars or long time members were privy to.

I feel like everyone here is really behaving well and all is much more relaxed. There was a feeling of waiting for flames and profanity at other sites that isn't here so far and hopefully never will be. It just isn't necessary. While I don't have small children at home I don't feel like I have to justify not wanting to read profane trash at many turns and threads. Not all sections of other sites had that problem, but where it existed it was pretty bad. I wish I could get in touch with others that have left to let them know we are here... maybe they will see the links posted elsewhere.

I skipped over the drama for the most part at .net, wanting to just learn as much as I could about my KLR, and find new and interesting people to hopefully ride with in the future. so here I am now, doing the same thing again. There have been a lot of personal and idealogical conflicts over at .net recently and to be honest, that doesn't bother me in the slightest. I've never taken the internet seriously anyway. My problem is that I have been on .net through 4 (four) incarnations and each time it goes down, all the information is lost. There is a boat load of great tech info that seems to get lost every year or so. The arguments and other nonsense gets lost but that's ok. I refuse to post pics there because they are hosted on some other remote sites without any backup and they get lost. On the previous version that you could upload pics directly, I had photos of myself, my wife, my son, even my backyard. I have backups of course but now I have to wonder what became of them. Is my wife the background on some Ukranian desktop? I dunno. I don't really care and wouldn't consider posting anything I wouldn't want the whole world to see ...but still.

One of the facts of life is that machines fail for one reason or another and to date .net seems to have no mirror or backup of any kind. Creating a backup on the same hard drive which will at some point fail is kind of pointless.
I can go to other forums that are much older and still find my old stuff, even back to '96! Each of these sites has gone through multiple upgrades, migrations and even successful DOS attacks yet still they manage to come through it. I have been a moderator on a large forum and it takes a lot of commitment and knowledge. Personally I wouldn't want the job again. If I were to start a message board, I would at least make sure that I had the server space and the tech ability (and of course the time) to maintain the site without losing everything every time a server crashed.

I have stored PMs with phone #'s, GPS coordinates, etc. I'll bet they're all gone now. Again.

Refugee here. I didn't know the owner of KLR....net personally. I appreciated his site's volume of members, thier knowledge, and thier common enjoyment of the KLR in general.
A couple thing do bother me now about K.....net, so I'll write them out here for anyone's comment.

The moderator issue was a problem. I think that if the owner of a site, any site, takes long forays away from the forum, he'd be wise to have moderators that are nuetral and balanced. Other site's with forums have very good policing of it's members when the moderators are incognito. The moderators should be more or less behind the scene and should refrain from being outspoken 'club members'. Once political and religious opinions become known to everyone, the brown nosing begins and favors are common place.

Shutting down the forum to make a point, is a real problem. Many people take countless hours to post trip reports, photo's and what not, and they are valuabe assets to a site. For a site owner to shut down the site only to make a point is not a sign of maturity. I sincerely hope that the shut down and restart of K....net was a glitch, and not a boy throwing a fit. Taking his ball and going home. So to speak.

Sales of site oriented mechandise was an issue I never understood about .net. The people were begging for site labelled junk, but the owner only teased them. He basically blew off the whole merchandising angle which could have made him some serious cash. Mugs, shirts, stickers, labelled panniers... you name it, would have sold of the shelves if given a moderate profit margin.

Now I understand that .net was his site. He can choose to promote it. Or he can choose to burn it down and start over.

I have good hopes for this site, KLRforum.com. I hope we can see fair moderation and an owner who cares. So far, so good.

Thank you KLR650 for this site. I wish you all the best, for our sake.

It's nice to have another site to come to for info and general chat and idea's, But if anyone thinks Glenn and the Mods were the only problem, they are really silly. Those same problems may crop up here because some of the same people are here or will come here. Some here are very conservative and some are more liberal, and sooner or later it WILL come to a head, as the forum provides anonymity, and thus, courage. There are troublemakers in every diverse group, and the KLR community is VERY diverse. I will still come here and read and post, as I believe this group has a lot to offer in knowledge and experiance, but I am not so gullible to think that the drama and adversity will be gone. Tazman, bear with me brother, but I'm not sure I completely understand what you're trying to say in your post: So, just to clarify. I'm not starting any rumors. Stating pre-existing rumors, maybe. But I only stated what everyone has been considering for the past few days. I also stated in my previoius post that I sincerely hope that the .net crash was caused by a glitch, and not by malice.

I was banned from .net prior to it's demise, and therefore; I would have nothing to lose or gain by starting rumors. The botton line is: I trully wish .net well, and hope that it's up to speed very soon, for the sake of the KLR and those who appreciate it.

Ride on.

Think about what you said in this post a post that could cause members to think there are differences. Conservative, Liberal, KLR650.net, or KLRforum are all difference and we don't need that. What we need to understand is we all have interestes in KLR650 and motorcycles in general. The motorcycle does not cause the differences it is choosing sides or name calling (I am not saying you do this) that causes differences. I don't shop for at teh same store for anything, I don't talk to the same people all the time, I don't ride the same route every day, I don't eat the same meal all the time, and I don't think I am correct all the time but I do listen to others and take from it what I can. If we all thought and did alike the only motorcycle sold would be a HD and you would have trouble finding a fullface helmet. What I am trying to say is we are all difference with simular interests. Respect others opinions and we will communicate better. Communicate is what we do hear. If it wasn't for Tech Days we probably would rarely meet any of the riders on these forums. I go to sportbike nights to meet other motorcycle riders and I was the only non-sportbike when I started going there. It took two weeks and a DRZ400 showed up. There was more interest in our motorcyles than any of the others (barring the new ZX-14).
So everyone step back, look each other in the eye, and offer a hand to all. Really it will be much more fun and entertaining. If you want to call someone a Richard, send them a PM and keep it between the both of you.

OK, Group Hug! Not you Joe!

I am going to continue to peruse both boards, and hopefully a lot of the tech info that was posted on .net will come back so I can save copies for future reference.

I don't doubt that some of that tech info will get posted here as well, which is all to the good.

It's just life, We are humans, and thats all part of it.

Well, first of all, I rarely say something that I haven't thought through, which IS the case here. Secondly, Are You honestly saying that I might upset people by writing about the obvious? Many of the posts here are expressing relief from the other site, when it wasn't just the site or it's mods and admin that were the problem. There were several differances in opnion over there that came to a head between not just admin and mods, but between users too. I simply stated the obvious, as I felt that this was being glossed over. Anyone can blame Glenn and the mods, and I'm sure some are justified in this, But there were others ( users ) who deliberatly sought to cause problems, and may do so here. Your post expresses a desire for civility and respect from all, which I wholeheartily agree with, But I am NOT going to hold my breath. After all, A Tiger can't change it's stripes. I would LOVE to be proven wrong on this one, but only time will tell. Finally, if what I post here really upsets someone, then they have some growing up to do. Ride Safe!

+ for honesty DSjunky,

but is it a rumor that he shut the site down. cus that a pretty bold statement!! I would just want make sure that is true or not before stating it!

anyways I also have good hopes for this site. I also hope Glenn gets his back up. It would be huge loss to the KLR world to loose all that valuable informantion.

Ride on.

Dsjunky. thanks for replying the way you did, no worries. your post was the first time I had heard of possible malice. so when I heard it, I asked. It sounded strong, I guess in a way I was warning about starting rumors.

I also did not know you had gotten banned. not that I needed to know this. glad to hear you arent starting any rumors, and sorry to hear if someone is. I just think thats a dangerous game. I wouldnt pick Glenn to be that type of person!

and I agree, Ride on Brother
