: Blue Ridge KLR650 Meet; Oct. 20, 21 & 22
GreenGene 09-29-2006, 01:13 PM This will be the third of our events here in the Southern Appalachians. We sure had a great time at our last gathering in East Tennessee with over 50 KLRs attending. We're expecting a big crowd at this one too!
We'll gather at Blue Ridge Motorcycle Campground (http://www.blueridgemotorcyclecamp.com/) and do some riding, wrenching and relaxing.
Even if you don't ride a KLR (???) and want to bring another Dual Sport bike, go ahead... we'll try to be nice to ya'.
You'll enjoy what is arguably the best riding venue within a 1000-mile radius and great camaraderie.
Questions? Just PM me for details.
Marty 10-04-2006, 09:12 AM On the "other dualsport" issue . . . hey, it's just "Southern Hospitality" kicking in.
I keep trying to find ways to get both Friday the 20th and Monday the 23rd off, but thus far it's a no go! Looks like the only way I'm going to be able to make this gathering is on another dualsport bike.
To be able to make it up and back from Friday morning to Sunday evening and cover the 1100 miles, about the best way is to ride up on the liter sized dualsport bike of mine.
Looking forward to seeing all of y'all up there!
GreenGene 10-04-2006, 09:34 AM Hey, Marty, your presence is mandatory, no excuses... even if you have to parachute in!
It wouldn't be a Southeast meet without ya'!
Marty 10-04-2006, 11:21 AM Gene,
I'll be there - never by parachute! Sometimes I don't quite get things right on the first time and parachuting is not one of those sports that I think I will ever try! I'm sure that I had enough folks pushing me out, I can be shoved out of the plane, otherwise, I'l wait until the plane lands. However, if it's burning or in some other way incapacitated, hand me the parachute!
I am so looking forward to being up in the mountains. I am putting on a new set of tires for the trip. I hope to wear all the sides off while up there so I don't feel bad when I wear the centers out commuting here in Florida! :D
Zrexrob 10-04-2006, 10:09 PM TDP
I can't wait!!!
Daddyjoe 10-04-2006, 11:50 PM There will be more than KLRs there, I,m bringing the wee-Strom so the MRS and I can enjoy the sights and sounds.
danny31 10-05-2006, 08:02 PM I've got to be honest folks, during the day I think about the election when my mind is not on work, but when I get home, and start reading this stuff all I can think about is
T D P
I can't wait!!!!!!!!
Zrexrob 10-06-2006, 06:06 AM I would have thought more of the spoutheast guys would have found this site/thread?
GreenGene 10-06-2006, 08:42 AM I don't know about anyone else but, as of this writing, I still can't log onto Glenn's site. If you have any way of contacting other people who were planning to come, please do so and let them know what's up.
Mangyrat 10-06-2006, 08:51 AM the site is up and down if i can get back in ill post saying Tdp is still on and where the rest of us are at so they can come over and chat.
buddy2224 10-06-2006, 08:56 AM I think last time I was able to get on over there last night Max had started a thread on it. So I think it's covered but it might be a good idea to bump his thread.

Looking forward to seeing all of you there.
Zrexrob 10-07-2006, 05:00 PM The three cabins near the creek by the bridge dont have heat. I stayed in one last weekend. At least I had a blonde to keep me warm :D
GreenGene 10-07-2006, 06:11 PM The three cabins near the creek by the bridge dont have heat. I stayed in one last weekend. At least I had a blonde to keep me warm :D
Aww, shucks... I ain't got a blonde.
Hey, Rob, you remember those cabin numbers? Just so I know what I'm in for.
Daddyjoe 10-07-2006, 07:44 PM I don't doubt you Zrexrob,
but their add says heat, which ever cabin I get I want heat.
CAMP IN CABINS
We start accepting Cabin Bookings March 1st for the 2006 season.
The cabins were designed, built, and furnished for the comfort of two people while traveling by motorcycle. Cabin rental includes sheets, pillows, blankets, and bath towels so there is no need to pack all of that camping gear on your bike while touring the beautiful mountains. The current nightly rate is $40.00 USD per cabin. Weekends are 2-night minimum for advance bookings (Fri/Sat) or (Sat/Sun). Due to the popularity of our cabins, we suggest that you call to book your dates. Our phone number is (828)235-8350. Check-in time is 2:00 p.m. and check-out time is Noon.
The cabins have windows and electric heat. Some of the cabins open onto the bank of the Pigeon River while the others have a view of the clear trout pond. The bathhouse is centrally located with separate showers and private dressing areas. Laundry facilities are also located between the separate bathhouses for men and women.
Maybe you have to ask for the heater.
GreenGene 10-08-2006, 09:51 AM Two questions need to be asked:
1) How much interest is there in a tech-day during this event? If you need help with a doo-job or whatever, post up!
2) Is anyone planning to bring tools, lift, etc.? Or, if there's enough interest, can anyone accommodate?
:?:
Zrexrob 10-08-2006, 04:30 PM I saw there webpage that said heated cabins, I was in cabin #1 and talked to the people in #2...no heat. I think the rest do be cant confirm that.
Zrexrob 10-08-2006, 04:32 PM Oh and if anyone who has cabin 1-2-3 and wants to give it up because of no heat, i'll take it.
Mangyrat 10-08-2006, 05:01 PM LOL yea like ill give up #1 to you.
and i think MXtrail had #2 your not likly to get his
Jim2001KLR650 10-08-2006, 06:41 PM I'm still interested in help with a doo-change if possible. I can bring some tools if needed. If no one else was looking for help then I'll wait and try it by myself.
Daddyjoe 10-08-2006, 08:34 PM Well I was going to ride the wee-Strom this trip and leave the KLR at home,,,,,, but,,,,,, that changed when I opened my mouth about the changes I'm doing to the KLR. So I will be trailering both bikes over.
Now because I am bringing the truck I'll have plenty room to bring all the tools needed for whatever. Just let me know what you want to do so I don't forget any "special" tools. And if anyone wants/needs the table lift, or reg lift let me know and I'll put them on the truck. I will also have a shim set if anyone wants to do a valve job.
I guess Marty will be packing light because he is riding up, so I can pick up the slack there with tools.
Mangyrat 10-08-2006, 09:10 PM considering how the forums are going now days a lot of people are going to miss the info if they want to work on bikes.
so i say if you can bring the tools/lift and prepare for everything it would not be overkill.
didn't the owner of the camp ground need to do the doohickey also ?
but if you really just want to turn a wrench i do need to check my valves one day im at 4k now and never checked them. im in no rush ill get to them one day. i would prefer to ride and socialize
GreenGene 10-08-2006, 09:59 PM You're a saint, Joe. http://www.topsmilies.com/smilies/happy0159.gif I've received one request by PM for help with a doohicky. That's all I can confirm for now.
ineptizoid 10-08-2006, 10:53 PM I was hoping to "do the doo" if somebody could bring the tools and wouldn't mind looking over my shoulder to offer advice and/or insults while the job is in progress...I'll be bringing some tools and my new doo, but don't have the specialty "doo tools." Or, for that matter, the nerve to try the job by myself even if I DID have the tools!
Thanks for your kind offer to bring your tools, Daddyjoe! Looking forward to meeting y'all up in God's Country!
GreenGene 10-09-2006, 06:39 AM So that's two... Jim2001KLR650 and ineptizoid for doo-changes. Anyone else?
Mangyrat 10-09-2006, 06:49 AM i sent joe a pm if we have time i would like to check the valves.
and i defenantly want to watch some one do the doo.
mtnman 10-09-2006, 08:24 AM Hey guys!
You fellows were hard to track down! Is anyone taking a travel trailer to this event, if so where are you parking your trailer? (I know we cant park at the BRC)
Floyd
Mangyrat 10-09-2006, 08:35 AM To the right of the bridge is parking for trucks and trailers. We have a ramp to assist in unloading/loading your motorcycles.
click on the about us link on the left side and read up on parking.
http://www.blueridgemotorcyclecamp.com/
no camping trailers just small pull behind trailers is what i think they are saying.
Mangyrat 10-09-2006, 08:48 AM i just got off the phone with Phil @ BRMC and he needs to do the doohickey. i gave him Fred's phone number hopefully he can get one in before the ride.
also Phil said he lost the shelter/tent to work on motorcycles due to high winds and if any one has something like a tent/cover where we can work on bikes please bring it. them cheap canopies from Wal-Mart with out sides will work.
i also confirmed 2 other things.
a few cabins along the river the cheap ones are with out heat 1 & 2 i think.
parking for trailers you can park them next to the bridge with the trucks small pull behind motorcycle trailers.
ill try and post this in the other 2 forums also.
Floyd i have no idea where they are setting up camers.
ops i forgot he said if it comes down to it he may let us move the 2 picnic tables out of a shelter and use that.
GreenGene 10-09-2006, 08:51 AM It's a very small parking lot for vehicles, Floyd. Not suitable for big rigs. However, if you want hook-up, there are a couple RV-capable campgrounds close by. If you'll Google "Cruso NC RV Campground" you should get a few hits. Burnette Cove, Laurel Bank, Riverside... all three are close by.

Floyd
mtnman 10-10-2006, 04:53 PM Where did everyone go?
Floyd
Zrexrob 10-10-2006, 05:14 PM There's like 8 different klr sites now, its hard to keep up.
ineptizoid 10-10-2006, 06:35 PM Hey mtnman, I think you'll find everybody back over at Glenn's site, there's a thread on TDP running on the Main Forum right now...
See ya over there
SC_shooter 10-10-2006, 09:12 PM Anyone know nice easy route from Charlotte?
GreenGene 10-10-2006, 09:35 PM All factors permitting, I'll personally lead (read: "show you the way on") three rides over the weekend, each departing as close to 9:00AM as possible. I'll leave it to the other leaders to describe what they have planned. Here's a brief description of each of mine, however, note that each is subject to change. See me at the camp for updates.
Friday:
I guess I'll call this one the Heintooga Ride. Accessed via Maggie Valley, it includes some nicely groomed but narrow gravel tracks inside the Qualla Boundary which lead up to the Cataloochee Divide. Then we'll make our way down a Blue Ridge Parkway spur to Heintooga Road (AKA Balsam Mountain Road) which is a 14-mile, easy gravel/dirt stretch through the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. More gravel roads through Cherokee land lead us back to the Blue Ridge Parkway. We'll follow the BRP as it passes its highest elevation, over 6000', on our way back to camp. All things considered, this ride is about as easy as a mountain terrain, DS ride gets. Still, there are many miles of gravel included and a creek-ford. Fun and relaxing. Level 1.
Saturday:
This one focuses on Wolf Mountain Road and Tellico Gap to the south of the BRP. Lots of gravel with a couple tricky sections on Wolf Mountain and a mudhole or two to dodge. This is where we get to stop on a granite dome outcropping. Interesting geological feature. Returning to the camp via NC215, nice twisty pavement and views of Lake Logan. Level 1.5.
Sunday:
NC209 to Max Patch "bald" mountain. Incredible views. Very gravel intensive ride once we get on it, continuing to a stop at Buzzard's Roost (more awesome views) and then a visit to Cataloochee Valley in the GSMNP and the fledgling Rocky Mountain Elk Project there. More gravel through the northeastern end of the Park and return to camp via US276. Level 1.
Notes:
1) We will have one gas/food stop on the way out each morning.
2) Since these are all remote areas, there are NO restaurants close by. Be prepared to pack your lunch, snacks, water... whatever it takes to keep you alive and happy.
3) These rides do have "bail-out" points, but not many. If you decide to cut your ride short, remember that the sooner I know, the better I can help you find your way out.
4) Maybe the most important: Ride Your Own Bike and Your Own Ride.
Daddyjoe 10-10-2006, 10:34 PM How long are the rides that you have planned?
Do people really get out of bed before 9 AM?
Paint Doc 10-10-2006, 10:57 PM Can anybody tell me the approximate travel time from Knoxville to Ashvville? I'm trying to work out any way possible for me to make it to TdP. Timing is critical, the earliest I would be able to leave is late Friday afternoon, if at all. Thanks for the help!
Daddyjoe 10-10-2006, 11:06 PM Yahoo sys 115 miles and 1 hr 53 min.
Mangyrat 10-10-2006, 11:11 PM i get 111.9 miles to the camp ground and 1 hr and 59min if he rides the speed limit
GreenGene 10-11-2006, 06:08 AM How long are the rides that you have planned?
Do people really get out of bed before 9 AM?
 I don't know about y'all but, when it's time to ride, I get up before breakfast. :D
Figure all day on the rides, Joe. I'll try to have you back in time for supper.
Daddyjoe 10-11-2006, 07:16 AM The wife will be with me on this trip, so we will sleep in and catch the sites close by. The leaves should be at their best by the 21st, so I'll see how many pictures I can get on the 1 gig memory card I have for my camera.
Mangyrat 10-11-2006, 10:00 AM 9 days and 3 hrs to go. im arriving at 2pm Friday checking time. :D
mtnman 10-11-2006, 12:53 PM This is the only KLR650 site I can get on! When are you going Joe, what day?
Floyd
Ditchdoc 10-11-2006, 05:50 PM Hey everybody, I finally found this site. It took a little searching to get it tracked down.
Greengene, the ride on Friday, When will you be getting into Maggie Valley and where will you be meeting at over there. I get off of work in Cherokee on Friday morning and hopefully I can meet up with you guys there and ride.
Anyway, it is nice to be able to get onto a "forum" again and I am looking forward to seeing everybody at the TdP.
Daddyjoe 10-11-2006, 06:11 PM I'll be packed up Thursday, and we will leave Friday AM, should get there around 2 PM.
mtnman 10-11-2006, 06:59 PM Kathy and I will most likely be up there Thursday. I think I found a place to park my airstream. I just got to get someone to handle the rental cabin, we got some people coming in on Friday night and someone needs to be here to check them in.
Floyd

That would be great, Andy. Let's see... http://www.thesmilies.com/smilies/expressive/scratchchin.gif (http://www.thesmilies.com)hmmm... http://www.thesmilies.com/smilies/confused0086.gif (http://www.thesmilies.com) I'd like to be coming through Maggie by 10:00 but I can fudge that a bit if you need me to. Actually, we'll be heading toward Cherokee on US19 after we leave Maggie Valley so potentially we might meet you somewhere betweeen the two. When do you expect to get loose?
mtnman 10-12-2006, 05:34 AM Gene,
Do you have these rides on your garmin GPS/mapsource software? If you do have them on Mapsource, would you email them to me as an attachment, (they are small files and easy to email)
Thanks!
Floyd
Ditchdoc 10-12-2006, 06:45 AM Unless I get a late call here, I should be able to cut loose from Cherokee around 0800. So I should be able to meet up with you guys no problem.
GreenGene 10-12-2006, 07:15 AM Gene,

Sorry, Floyd... no can do. First of all I don't have Mapsource. Next, I'm a GPS doofus. And that ain't likely to improve any time soon. http://www.thesmilies.com/smilies/confused0058.gif (http://www.thesmilies.com) On the other hand, we'll have a highlighted map at the camp that you can get some ideas from.

Good deal! How about we meet up at the Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie? For now let's shoot for 10:00. If your situation changes let me know.
Ditchdoc 10-12-2006, 09:01 AM Will do
mtnman 10-12-2006, 05:08 PM gene,
Thanks anyway. Hope to see you there.

Floyd
dirtconnector 10-15-2006, 07:02 AM So from what I gather the other site crashed in a major way and so far a few have crawled out of the debris to start posting here. At least Green Gene, mtnman, and Critter are here and thats good enough for me. 8)
CRITTER 10-15-2006, 07:31 AM D9 Ron Good to see ya man.
I was hoping you'd pop in.
Thought you were missing in action.

See you there.
Daddyjoe 10-15-2006, 08:10 AM Guys: will someone at TDP PLEASE take a good pic of critter doing a wheelie water crossing, or something so he will have something to put as his avatar. I think he is falling off the deep end trying to find a good one.

Well I see ya found it, I was just bringing one back into the foal. Found him over on ADV Rider cause I thought he was trashing a KLR like they seem to do so often over there, so when he said he had a KLR I hooked him up to the site. Unless Doyle comes up with some other plan I guess we will make it over there late Friday morning, maybe. Either way I CANNOT wait to make it. I am looking forward to seeing everyone, and Gene get those pictures up so we can see what things will look like when we get there.
GreenGene 10-15-2006, 03:29 PM Hold on, Danny... I'm not back from my ride yet.
OK, I'm back.
Check the Trip Reports Forum. In a little while. I gotta resize 'em first.
mtnman 10-15-2006, 05:57 PM Anyone going to bring some firewood for a campfire? There use to be a place to have a nice fire where everyone could sit around, do they still have that there at BRC?
Floyd

Mangyrat 10-15-2006, 10:30 PM http://www.blueridgemotorcyclecamp.com/
Quiet time between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.
Cars, trucks, MC trailers, and other 4-wheel vehicles are not allowed to cross the bridge into the campground. All such vehicles must park in designated parking lot.
RVs or large trailers and campers pulled by 4-wheel vehicles are not allowed.
A central campfire is provided each evening. Individual fires are not allowed because of the risk to the Pisgah National Forest.
No Pets are allowed in the campground.
mtnman 10-16-2006, 06:58 AM Just a word of caution. The mountains are full of leaf lookers (tourist). Be careful driving up this weekend with the additional traffic and people not watching what they are doing.
mtnman
Daddyjoe 10-16-2006, 07:30 AM I second that....I saw a green ranger pulling two bikes and that guy was all over the road, looking at the spectacular sites.
Daddyjoe 10-16-2006, 08:00 AM Anyone have the web site for the LA guys?
I haven't seen any of them posting, and wanting to know if they are comming up.
GreenGene 10-16-2006, 08:02 AM Ditto! Mike and I played KLR dodge-ball yesterday. Even on a couple of the gravel roads. Gotta stay alert out there!
Mangyrat 10-16-2006, 08:11 AM cant be any worse than riding around here with all the soccer mom's on the cellphones and the illegal migrants that don't understand the traffic signs.
mtnman 10-16-2006, 08:11 AM Gene,
How many miles are your rides? Also how rough are they?
I have a couple great scinic rides made up of forest roads, the Blue Ridge Parkway and some pavement that are very short and easy. One route is 45 miles and the other route is about 65 miles. If no one has any other ride options I can take some folks with Me, Kathy and Kathleen. This could be another option for riders who want something slow and easy.

Mangyrat 10-16-2006, 08:18 AM mtnman on Friday a few will be showing up later in the day and might want to get in a short ride.
and on Sunday a few are going to have to leave early so again a short ride would be nice.
i was thinking of doing the 45 mile loop with the wife Friday after noon around 3pm or so.
and on Sunday i wanted to try and squeeze a few hr ride in before i have to leave around noon.
hint hint
GreenGene 10-16-2006, 08:42 AM Sounds great, Floyd! That's another option that some may want to choose.
Neither of mine are what I call intense but they're pretty much all day affairs. The roughest one I have planned includes Wolf Mountain Road which has some moderately rough sections... I gauge it as a 1.5, out of a possible 4. Parts of it are a little steep and have no gravel, just loose dirt and rocks, so a beginner might not want to do this one just yet. The other rides should be easly accomplished by everyone, assuming their "rear-end conditioning" is up to snuff.

Any pictures yet. I need one of my brother in law, David, on his KTM:)
mxtrail 10-16-2006, 12:00 PM Gene,
Thanks for the warning about the kitchen, looks like I need to pack the BIG jar of pickled pigs feet.
MangyRat,
I'm looking forward to being your neighbor for the weekend. I hope my snoring don't keep you guys up. And don't worry about the Hooters Girls and Playboy bunnies, I broke up with all of them. Har...

Great! Anyone who wants to tag along is welcome. We can wait until it warms up some before we take off since the rides are short and only about 2-3 hours each.

This should not be a problem if we can have a fire, bring hot dogs, bums, chilli & stuff and we can all cook over the fire.
Myself and the 2 ladies will be in Laurel Bank Campground 1 mile up the road in the camper.
We can help some if needed, I have a kitchen. You fellows may want to bring a hot plate to cook on as well, you should have power there at the little shacks.
The weather looks to be good right through the weekend.

CRITTER 10-16-2006, 03:54 PM I spoke to Phil at the Blue Ridge Motorcycle Campground this afternoon.
He said they would put on a very reasonable hotdog dinner Saturday night for us.
Same type deal we had from the owners at TdT pay per meal.
I'm sure it'll be good. They will also have their great breakfasts to get us going each day.
That said, still bringin a few MREs for those late night munchies.
Jim2001KLR650 10-16-2006, 04:31 PM It looks like I'll be coming up on Thursday afternoon. I can't wait to get up there and start this weekend. I'm ready to get away and have a blast with everyone.
dirtconnector 10-17-2006, 08:44 AM D9 Ron Good to see ya man.
I was hoping you'd pop in.
Thought you were missing in action.
Darren says thanks for the tools, I'll bring them with us to TdP
See you there.
Man that avatar is a Critter!
Hey Dude, When and how(what route) are ya'll coming through Friday?
demononthebrakes 10-17-2006, 02:45 PM I might do some paved twisty stuff Sunday for those who might want to tag along. Whats left of my Pirelli Scorpions can handle that but anything needing "knobs" might be washout city.
CRITTER 10-17-2006, 04:35 PM Ron,
Looks like we are leaving Charlotte between 6-7am Friday taking scenic ride up.
Probably SR 11 out of Gaffney SC and follow it all the way over to 226.
and just take 226 all the way to the campground.
We were looking for backroad routes that didnt take us too far out of the way.
Whacha got in mind ? :c0052
Brent,
I suspect you'll still be babying that same silly tire next time we all get together. :c00260
demononthebrakes 10-17-2006, 04:55 PM Critter I havent ridden it much since our last ride and its got some street life left in it. I do plan to ride some offroad with it Friday though and that may kill it once and for all.
I like to get as many miles out of a tire as possible before swap out time even if that means I vary the surfaces/rides.
I may just go ahead and mount that other Scorpion though beforehand. 8)

Just bring the new tire with you and put it on when you need it, Thats what I did in Colorado last month. There should be plenty of tire changers there to help out.

dirtconnector 10-17-2006, 06:50 PM Critter, I'm open to anything. I'll keep an eye on here for solid plans later on... Rain has set me back a little and may cut into my ride time

Trying my best to get friday off. If I can and some of the local guys like Rico want to head out friday,
I will probably head out with them. If no one is heading out locally, I'll see you at 7 am, lol.

So is Rico the artist formally known as KLRico ?
Love to see him make it too.
Call me Thursday if you can make it buddy, Darren was bummin' thinking you were having to miss this one. 8)

Once I get wound up for a trip like this, the miles and time shrink.
Yep Rico is KLRico, we went riding the other day after work. He was

Severe Storm Knocks Down Trees in Tenn.
By ELIZABETH A. DAVIS
Associated Press Writer
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Torrential rains and hurricane-force winds ripped through Tennessee, downing trees and forcing officials to close major roads in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on Tuesday.
The storm, which had a peak wind gust of 106 mph, swept into the 520,000-acre preserve that straddles the Tennessee-North Carolina border on Monday evening.
In southeast Texas, the storm was blamed for severe flooding that killed at least five people, while it damaged hundreds of homes and forced schools to close in northern Louisiana.
Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco on Tuesday declared a state of emergency for 11 parishes, and ordered state emergency management officials to send teams to assess damage. FEMA pledged to send teams later this week, authorities said.
One of the hardest-hit areas was Grayson, a town in north-central Louisiana's Caldwell Parish, which received 17 inches of rain between Sunday evening and Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service said.
In parts of northern Louisiana, the totals were the most in a single storm event since the Tropical Storm Allison in 1989, the agency said.
"The rainfall amounts were exceptional," said meteorologist Nick Fillo. "Outside of a tropical system, it happens every once in a while."
In the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Gatlinburg, two people were injured, including a 6-year-old boy when a tree fell on his family's camper, authorities said. The boy was taken to a hospital Tuesday morning.
The storm came during one of the park's busiest seasons as thousands of visitors travel there to see the brilliant fall foliage.
"We are not evacuating, but we are advising campers to vacate at least through 8 a.m. (Wednesday)," park spokeswoman Nancy Gray said.
Major roads closed for debris removal included a road that links the Tennessee and North Carolina sides of the park.
In Texas, floodwaters from the San Jacinto River seeped into subdivisions in Houston's northern suburbs Tuesday, a day after torrential storms and tornadoes wreaked havoc. An 18-year-old man who drowned when his horse got scared and threw him into the water was among the deaths attributed to the storm.
The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for the West Fork San Jacinto River until late afternoon Thursday, as residents of stilt houses hauled belongings out of their sheds and yards while those in ground level houses moved to motels to avoid the rising water.
"Just because the rain has stopped does not mean the flood dangers have ceased," said Gloria Roemer, spokeswoman for the Harris County Office of Emergency Services. About 50-250 households could be affected, Roemer said.
demononthebrakes 10-18-2006, 01:33 PM Yeah the rivers/creeks are wayyyyy up around my area. Makes me think Hurricane Creek might be a very tough task this weekend.
I guess it depends on how much more rain we get from the front coming thru tomorrow.
mtnman 10-18-2006, 06:20 PM It sure was a pretty day in Mortimer, NC today. I have the bikes loaded in the truck, the camper is hooked to the truck and I am headed to Cruso, NC in the morning. I should be there by noon tomorrow.

Hey Critter, I talked to Jon last night and he had taken the bolt out with a pair of pliers instead of using a wrench. When he got ready to put it back in, he couldn't get enough grip on the head to tighten it back up. I told him that when we get back we are gonna have to go somewhere and buy him some cheap tools. The boy has no tools and no clue when it comes to working on things, but I like him anyway.
We are leaving out here in a few minutes and should be at BRMC this evening. See yall there. :D

Ditchdoc 10-19-2006, 09:16 AM In case anybody is thinking of comming over US 441 through GSMNP you might want to call ahead and check the road conditions. I heard that as of this morning the road is still closed but should be open soon. Here is a press report from the National Park Service.
Temporary Road Closures
Several roads on the Tennessee side of the park are currently closed due to a severe wind storm. Additional details. Roads affected include US-441(Newfound Gap Road), Laurel Creek Road from the Townsend entrance to Cades Cove (this cuts off access to Cades Cove), Foothills Parkway West, and Cherokee Orchard Road outside of Gatlinburg. Reopening Newfound Gap Road is the current priority and the park hopes to have it reopened by Wednesday evening. For updates, please call (865) 436-1200.
