: UTAH Tech Day

I just bought my KLR last month and need a doohicky installed, plus would like to meet/ride with others. I can offer my home in Bountiful as a meeting site, and Skyline drive starts about a mile away (25 miles up to Bountiful peak and down Farmington Canyon. The best view of Great Salt Lake available!)

Just a suggestion, but look into attending the Canyonlands Motor Classic in Moab at the end of May. Lots of KLRs will be there, and we'll almost certainly be doing some tech stuff.

Check out Arrowhead's site, click on the CMC banner in the middle of the page.

Since buying my bike in '05, I've eagerly scanned the forums for a nearby tech day. I've seen a number of KLRs since moving to Salt Lake and would hope that a little passion and effort could lead to a successful gathering. Of course, a little expertise wouldn't hurt either.

Since last year I have met a couple other KLR'sters and a tech day looks more real this year. I replaced my doohickey yesterday so I have the tools (and an extra woodruff key!) Good days for me are:23 AUG, 20 SEP, 27 SEP, 2008.

I continue to see a number of us on the road (unfortunately) and just yesterday was thinking about some minor tinkering I need/want to do. Doing the doo' alone would be a great result to a gathering. The August date would be poor for me (until late afternoon), but the two September dates look good.

What can I do to help Utah's Tech Day see more than 2 bikes in attendance?

Spread the word. If you are with other groups, online or not, or know of anyone else, let them know.
I am at cyby@earthlink.net , or craig.r.young@usar.army.mil and 801-824-1339

I know of one or two others, and will tell them.

Craig,

With a firm date/time and a set location, we can distribute flyers to local motorcycle shops. I have visited Performance in Draper a few times and at least one of the employees has a KLR and should be amenable to spreading the word.

Your house could be ideal, as a group ride(s) would be so convenient. I don't know if having some lifts on hand would be ideal; I could deliver mine prior to the date so that I could drive the bike. What mods, if any, are you personally wanting to accomplish? How's the valves?

I just bought a new Go/no-go feeler gauge to do the valves. I also have a MC Jack.

I would think valves and doohickey adjustments/installations. When I did the around the lake ride with two others the most beneficial was talking to the others about what they have done and their KLR experiences. I imagine a tech day is largely a little wrench turning and a lot of "bench racing", which is certainly appropriate.
The Bountiful B to Farmington Canyon (skyline drive) road is about 3 miles from my house and certainly do able with a KLR, and a couple of side trails are available that are more challenging. Minimum 25 miles, max ??

Yep, valves and doohickies are the big ticket items. I'd be happy to accomplish either...both would have me buying beverages of choice for anyone lending a hand and/or expertise. I've already made a few posts on the General Forum on threads started by Utah riders.

I got on what I assume is Skyline sometime last year. The main road was plenty fun, but I also found myself on some side trails that were both too technical and seemingly just right. I just ran out of time that day and the upper road to Farmington was not open.

Date?

Count me in from Sandy UT. End of September seems like a long way away but I'll roll with it. I bought a 06 about a month ago and have been commuting from Sandy to SLC daily. I don't know that I can add much technical advice yet but I can stand around an point and the cool stuff on your bike. I'm gonna need a doo hicky so I wouldn't mind watching how it’s done.

I'm lime, too. Embarassingly enough, my "for sale" post keeps popping up in the Similar Threads box at the bottom of this page. I was a little cash-strapped at the time, but I'm glad I didn't have a chance to sell it.

I do want it deleted. I edited the post, but tell me whether I could have actually deleted it. If so, I could not figure out how to do so.

Hey Craig,
I will bring chips and and some tools(I have everything but the flywheel puller) that way we can have extra just incase. Have you heard from Brandon? I will try to contact him and others. Let me know if there is something else I can bring. I know I am planning on doing the "Do" and putting on some heated grips along with a skid plate. And any other smaller mods if there is time. See you on Saturday. Thanks, Dave.

Have not heard from Brandon. I put the notice on a couple other forums.

Would you be interested in providing guidance to remove the tank/radiator cover decals? I'd rather be stealth mode, and not let anyone know what the h311 I am riding. Anyone have a recommend on a decal remover?

BTW - is this 8 AM?

I think the tank decals are applied then covered with clearcoat... so they will stay! If it was a sticker I have seen them removed with a hairdyer. Look at http://www.bigcee.com/klr650faq.html.

Yes, 8 AM. Sorry I put military time. 8PM would be 2000 in my world!

I hit up a couple mailorder places for freebies / goodies and recieved responses from a couple.

Hey Craig, thanks once again for your help and letting me use your tools. I installed my skid plate tonight(took about 10 minutes) but I still could use a little help on the heated grips if you have a spare hour one day. I will send you the pictures I took on the ride. Thanks again, Dave

The First Annual (?) Northern Utah Tech day came off without a hitch. We changed a doohickey on a 2008 (loose spring) and made minor adjustments on everything else. Learned about each others bikes and a lot about KLRs in general. Went for a nice ride in the mountains afterwards and determined that a tech day would be needed about every six months. Also laid the groundwork for a fall Great Salt Lake ride in late October of early November.
The nice folks at KLR650.com sent key chains for all so everyone left with a nice souvenier.

OK, fellas, when shall we have the next TECH DAY? Sometime in October?

AND.... Who wants to ride around the GSL, or maybe camp at the half point (LUCIN)?

You know me Craig, I am up for any ride or tech day. Count me in. October 25th could be a possible ride or another tech day for those who want to takle a project? Dave.

I had so much fun on the last ride I went a little crazy online. Hopefully this weekend I'll in bolting on:

Engine guard (with pegs), tank guards, skid plate, hand guards, oil plug and steel foot pegs. I think I’ll need to pull the tank to put on the guards so I plan to do the carb modifications at the same time.

I’ll still need to do the doo - but at least it will look tuff.

Dave, is yours still making that funny noise or has it loosened up and quieted down?

I’d still like to see the pics….

RIDING

25 October is no good for me, but 11, 17 and 18th are fine, as well as the 13th which is Columbus day.

Here's a thought: Ride to Lucin on Friday, 17 OCT, afternoon/evening, camp out, continue the ride on the 18th (Saturday). (I have every other Friday off) We could probably pack all the stuff, or volunteer someone to be the sag wagon to carry luxury items (tools, fuel, campers, hot tub)

TECH DAY

Any Saturday mentioned plus those in November (except the 15th).
If I know there are a lot coming I will go to the dealer and see if he can kick in some goodies and maybe show up with KLR specific crap to sell or raffle. I guess we need to come up with a worthy cause... " Orphaned KLR Children in Need"

The big green pig still makes the noise but it only makes it when the bike is totally cold. In addition I switched to a lighter weight of oil. I think I will go back to a heavier weight next time.

FOR Riding and Camping........The 10th and the 11th would work for me if the 25th dosent work for you. I would just need to leave the group a little earlier on Saturday to be back in Provo around 3:00. Or the 7&8th of November is totally open for me.

RIDE Only........any Friday in October/November except the 31st. Or any Saturday but the 11th, 18th,

Let me know what you guys are leaning towards. Dave

Hey guys great ride for the last tech day.
It was fun to see the guts of an 08, now I know what I am in for.

As far as the GSL ride goes I am absolutley in if I can make it. My October is shot until the very last weekend(25th I think). November is wide open.

Keep me posted.

ah.... I am back. I'd be more inclined for an early weekend ride or after work ride. My wife probably isn't into me taking in an overnighter expedition.
