what kind of oil?

Hey guys, I know this will open up a can of worms and I'm sure this was discussed alot on here but I was just wondering if the 4 stroke oil at the dealer is any better than just a regular motor oil? Also I hear alot of guys using the synthetic stuff and was just wondering if it is worth it? The first change I used kawa oil. Just looking for a little input. Thanks

Changing it on a regular basis is more important that type, as long as you're using the recommended weights..

I use Rotella or similar 15w-40 dino oil and change every 2000 miles. But that's me.

You're gonna get a lot of different answers, but all in all, use what you want, but just change it..

I've found that diesel specific oil works best in my KLR (Rotella, Delo 400 or WallyWorld generic). Many noob complaints about the KLR (after sitting for a day or two) dieing when shifted into first gear. Since going to diesel specific oil, my KLR can sit for weeks and it won't die when I shift into first gear.

I use Redline Synthetic 20W50. A guy convinced me several years ago and it's all I've used in my bikes since. Wish I could remember how he convinced me but it evidently stuck.

glad to see someone else uses Rotella 15W40. I have been using it in my 07 YZ250F race bike for a few months now with no problems so I figured if it was turning 13,500, then it should be very fine for my KLR.

I think you'll find a lot of motorcycle owners using Rotella (or similar types of diesel oil)
I know a lot of Gold Wing riders use it, and I was always using it in my V Strom, too..

If you're near an Autozone, they have their brand of diesel 15w-40, Coastal. I've used it in my KLR and just about everything else. Don't know about using synthetic, heard arguments going in both directions. As for clutch sticking when engine is cold, I just break my clutch plates free by rocking the bike with clutch in and in 1st gear a bit before hitting the starting button.

I've used rotella 15/40 for a long time in mine, never had any problems.

In 04 just after I bought my bike my local dealer didn't have a 10W40 in the Kawasaki oil, the owner told me any "good quality" oil was fine to use in it. I used tech 2000 10W40, and 20W40 for about 20,000 miles. Now I use castrol oil and the wt depends on the temps, (10W40 in cool weather and 20W40-50 in hot weather.
After th tech oil I tried the rotela and didn't like the way it shifted with it in the bike, I tried the synthedic and developed oil seeping around some of the gaskets, thats when I went to Castrol. I now have 35,600 miles on my bike.

So the choice is yours as to what oil to use, but I agree the key is changing it reg and often. I change mine between 1500 and 2000 miles.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life.

My brother made the mistake of using 10-40 castrol full synthetic for cars. His clutches were burnt in a week. I agree with paper, changing it often is the most importaint part. Any moto 10-40 will work. I use spectra gold 10-40.
