Default 2.5 lilter oil capacity? not mine

I bought my first KLR650 on Saturday and did the doohickey on Sunday. I let the oil drain forever while I was wrenching but when I refilled it only took 2 liters. Also, this afternoon when I checked the oil (thinking maybe I was on a slope when I filled it) it was over full. I dont smell any gas in the oil.

Did you change the oil filter also? If not, your amount needed for an oil change will be less. On a level as possible surface, I stand the bike up until it will balance. The oil should come right to the top of the sight glass, after it has been allowed to all drain to the crankcase. More oil than that, and you are creating problems for your seals. Less, and you are running the engine short of it's lifeblood.

2.2 litres if the oil filter was left in place, or 2.5 litres if the oil filter was replaced. Once fresh oil has been added to the crankcase, you will need to start the engine to allow the oil to circulate through the filter and housing. Check your oil level again.

When checking oil, I like to loosen the oil filler cap and remove it before I stand the bike upright. I have a theory that the closed oil system will hold some oil in the top end of the engine. I also spit on worms when I fish.

I just went and checked again, over full. I pulled about 1/3 liter from the bike to get her within the sight glass. I did replace the filter and tipped it a few times side to side during the doohickey install. I am sure all the oil that was gonna drain out did. Also, I did circulate the oil before top off.
I forgot to warm up the engine before I drained it, do you think that made a difference?

Not sure. Maybe it's a WV model. Keep an eye on that sight glass with the bike standing upright before you start it.

Even a KLR 250 holds 2 liters. Maybe you got a KLR 125?

They'll fit either bike. Get your post count up to fifteen and you can post pic's.

The oil capacity matches that of an older Vespa.....

KLR600 have the sight glass set for 2 litres. Maybe you have a early model clutch cover on your bike

WTF? I hope it is just some sort of fluke. Maybe I didnt get all the old oil out, or maybe there is 500cc of dead mouse inside... or gold. My luck it will be coal dust. At least it hasnt over filled itself again.
Really though I have been changing the oil on my bike for 20 years, and this is the first time I have had a problem. I'll drain the oil and refill it and see what happens.

I changed mine and I did not warm it before change. It makes a difference. A BIG difference relative to capacity.
