I will say and I'll get beaten for saying it but....imho they have gotten better but no is the answer. They have just said that it is normal for an engine to eat oil within a certain range or period and until your engine drinks it that bad they won't warrantee it.

BUT...I'm sure others with more actual experience will chime in and correct me.

I have been looking for newer model and I seen some clean 09's at reasonable prices but do spend a bit more for a 2010 without having to have shares in an oil company

IMHO......it doesn't matter what year besides the 08 you buy, I would put the cost of a 685 kit aside as in the acutal cost of buying the bike if you need to just in case. You may never need to install the kit but if you do, the funds will be there and it may not hurt as bad? It's a bad way to think about it, but from what I have experienced many still do drink oil when used on the highway for extended periods. The gen I bikes didn't do this unless thrashed from what I have experienced. When they changed the piston and rings for the new generation they somehow screwed things up....how and why I can't say. There is some proof that the rings don't seat perfectly in the bore near the gap in the rings, some say the bore isn't perfectly round or has inperfections after time used. Some say the sleeve develops imperfections due to heat warpages or incorrect heat cycling. Some say it could be improper break in proceedures.
It doesn't matter what causes this issue the factory has said that until you drink so may cc's per 1000kms or miles this is normal....go figure?
If I were going to buy an 08 and up machine I would also have the funds for a 685 kit already set aside or already purchase the kit ready for when it is needed. Some will say I'm stupid for even saying this, but after installing 30 plus kits to date and 99% of the newer gen bikes for oil burning reasons....I see the proof.

As I said before some with much more experience with doing the work on the KLR will chime in and say different I'm sure.

Well, let's put the premise (ALL Generation 2 KLR650s are prone to consume excessive oil) to the test!

HOW MANY forum members owning 2008-or-later KLR650s suffer from excessive oil consumption?

Year and mileage for those so afflicted, please!

Conversely, how many forum members owning 2008-or-later KLR650s DO NOT suffer from excessive oil consumption?

Bonus poll question: What percentage of KLR650s manufactured since the beginning of time have aftermarket pistons installed?

My 08 started burning oil at about 4K miles. It's bumping 56K miles now and has burned about 4 gallons in that time (yea I used to record the usage). So I'm into the oil company about $75.

Mine sips most of the time but extended periods around 5K rpm will cause it to drink. Not a big deal to me I check it when I fill up if on a trip.

Default My 2008

I am the second owner of my KLR650.....I ride it on the slab daily when possible at 70 to 75 MPH for 72 miles every day and it burns no oil to speak of and has 16 K on it today. Stock set-up? I have no clue. When I got the bike I planned on a 685 if needed but did not so on I go.....I would have to burn a pretty fair amount of oil to overhaul it however. For the price of a 08/09 KLR, easy math for me.

Default Oil

I put about 14000 miles on a 09. I now have a 12 just broken in. I have never added oil to either. I have noticed (possibly) slight oil consumption if riding at high speed (70 actual) some drop in the level. I guess I've been lucky. I change oil and filter fairly often. Around 2500 miles and use high quality Honda or Kawasaki 10w40. Blessings BB

At 10K on my '09, it uses no oil at all. In those miles, it probably hasn't spent more than a couple of hours over 5300 rpm's or so. 95% of the time I'm under 5000. So, I'm pretty easy on it: don't know if that's a factor or not.

My '08 was a well-documented oil consumer.

I can't quite figure out if my '09 is or not. I rode it a couple of hundred miles on I10 and had to add oil. Other than that one time it hasn't needed to be topped off. Late in the month I may get back out to the desert again; I'll see if it uses up oil on that trip.

Doesn't matter long term, though. Ima throw a 719 in it in a month or so.
