Default 1984 KLR600 Acerbis Tank

Hi Folks,

Here's hoping someone out here can help me?!?!?

I acquired a 1984 KLR600 with only 3400 original miles on it last year. A little TLC and she fired up and ran fine. The only problem I have with the bike is the fact that the factory tank is too small. Seems like I'm at the gas station every other day. I know Acerbis made an oversize tank for this model a few years back and I would love to get my hands on one. If anyone out here has one they want to sell or knows where I could possibly locate one, please contact me at lifeline00@wmconnect.com or call me at (541)923-2700. Thanks in advance for any help!!!

Did you ever find a larger gas tank?

Hey Handychas,

Yes I did find an Acerbis tank, but it unfortunately is green. No holes and I rebuilt the petcock and mounted it, but I'm still in the market for a white one. If you have any leads, please drop me a line. Thanks for the reply!

Yo Kawazuki

I was looking at an IMS tank but for a newer year, don't think it will fit.
I have a 1985. I am currently doing some mods to add a windshield and a tail rack.
The windshield should make it more road friendly. I picked up a luggage rack from a 04 KLR and I'm making a bracket adapter for the mount and turn signals.
I'll let you know how it works out.

I'm pretty sure the only oversize tank available for the older KLR's is the Acerbis. I talked to a guy down in socal that has one for sale but he wants about $300.00 for it. He says he only had gas in it once, but he thinks it's made of gold and is no rush to sell it for a fair price. The one I found was on Ebay so I snagged it for $75.00. I can give you his contact info if you want to try and work a deal with him.

I have a rear rack for your bike if you're interested. It's made by GSM. It's made of tubular steel, painted black and is about 10" x 12". It mounts to the rear grab handle holes and to the extra holes in the frame behind the handles. It's sturdy and I didn't have it on my bike for long. I removed it and mounted a 2 gallon auxiliary tank in it's place and machined up a rear aluminum rack for mine. If I can figure out how to download pictures, I'll send them to show you my set-up.

I paid $35.00 for the GSM rack. I'll let you have it for $10.00 + shipping if you're interested.

I also bought a Slipstreamer CF-40 windscreen kit for the KLR. It's made for light touring duty and easily mounts to the bars with the provided hardware. They cost about $90.00 these days, but I love it when the weather gets cold. Doesn't make the bike a Goldwing, but sure makes a nice pocket of air to ride in.

Have you done your "doohickey" yet? Supposedly they're not such an issue on the older KLR's, but I swapped mine just to be safe. Did the Eagle Mfg. kit and definitely feel better about reliability. Also got rid of the stock cam chain tensioner and put an A.P.E. manually adjustable part in place. Anything to keep the motor from tearing itself up because the big engine items aren't available from Kawasaki anymore.

The tail rack worked out great even the compact turn signals fit in well.
I should have the windshield on tonite if I can find the right hardware.
I was at a tech-day last weekend and nobody was sure about the "doohickey" on the older bikes. I guess I should do it when I get time just to be safe.
I want to get this thing running so I can get some ridin' time in.
