85 kl 600 Runs crappy

Hey everyone I just purchased a 1985 KL 600. The guy I bought it from said bike started over heating last time he rode it (years ago). I checked the coolant it was like pudding. I flushed out entire cooling system and replaced the water pump seal (thought maybe it was leaking). I cleaned the carb and now when I try to start the bike it will only start if Im holding my hand in the airbox blocking air flow to the carb. and when it does start it runs horrible. Any ideas what could cause this??
Thanks!

A diaphragm air leak can cause the symtoms you describe. Are you CERTAIN you got the diaphragm into its grooves and sealed it absolutely air-tight? No rips or tears in the diaphragm fabric?

Clean, "dry," fuel? "Choke" (starting enricher) working o.k.?

I'd imagine you might need to remove, disassemble, and clean-and-adjust the carb, after a long storage interval; don't know how extensive your previous carb cleaning might have been.

The carb may need a bath in industrial-strength carb cleaner.

The first thing I would check is the compression… It sounds to me like the owner before you added some “Fix it from a Can” crap to the coolant….
Lets face it at worst the top end need come apart and new head gasket put on maybe a piston and rings… but that is the worst case…. You know the bike runs so nothing catastrophic happened to the motor…. If you picked the bike up for a good deal sounds like a nice little project that you will love when its done….. The older 600 are Awesome in the woods.

Thanks for the responses. I was wondering about that diaphragm what exactly does that do? I wanted to check the compression and check the valves but cant seem to find any info specs. on that.

This explains the diaphragm:

Cliff's Notes might say, atmospheric pressure on the underside of the diaphragm, and ventrui vacuum on the upper side, lifts the slide, uncovering the needle jet and the main jet. Without an air-tight seal, the slide will not rise properly and normal engine running is impossible.

Regarding compression testing, your bike has an automatic compression release, compromising a normal compression test.

Leak-down test is possible, without disabling the compression release.
