help oil leak source

Ok I just looked at a 2000 KLR 650 with 33,000 miles. I brought a buddy along that owns a newer KLR first generation bike. He thought that the bike ran good and pulled as strong as his or stronger. The only problem that I see is that there was a lot of oil down at the bottom of the motor. I pulled the plastic engine guard off to see if I could tell where it was coming from. The guard was full of oil. I wiped the engine down and started up. There is a very small hole under the water pump that seemed to be the source of the oil. I am Not absolutely sure but it seems like it was coming from the hole. What is that hole anyway? If the hole is not the source then where's it coming from?

There could be many reasons for oil on the bottom of the engine, spillage from oil changes being one of them. Lube from the chain also gets flung in there. It could also be a leaky drain plug. The base gasket (particularly if some damn fool replaced the stock gasket with a Cometic gasket - ask a couple of us how we know).

The hole under the water pump is a weep hole and if anything comes out of there it should be coolant weeping past the pump shaft seal.

In truth, the only thing I would be concerned about, and what you might look for, is a damaged case.

First, look for obvious damage to the bottom of the case that would come from it not having a real skid plate. Second, look at the drain plug for signs of damage stemming from over tightening of the plug. That damage could be a crack but would more likely be stripped threads.

Without being damaged, KLRs are not known to be oil leakers.

Hi, and welcome to the forum. Your oil leak. I'd try cleaning all trace of oil from the engine. A coupla cans of aerosol brake clean will help dry things up. Then watch for where the oil is coming from. Lets hope its one of the places Tom mentioned. If the oil is coming from the water pump weep hole....



There is an oil seal back in there under the water pump cover. Clear to the back, behind the mechanical seal. If it fails, oil will puke out the weep hole. Not a common phenomenon. But it is a possibility. If you are not sure where the leak is after you degrease the engine, take some baby powder and dust the engine real good. You'll find the leak.
