Choke Cable Routing

I picked up a 1987 KLR 650 and can't get the choke cable adjusted properly. Is it possible that the routing is wrong? if so, what is the proper routing from the carb to the handlebar. Could it be that the bars are not stock and shorter than the original?

I have the cable adjusted and the bike is running. Has the KLR cough when starting cold, I have done the 22 cent mod and have the pilot screw out 1 1/2 turns.

Still wondering about the cable routing.
