New stator

Any opinions on which stator to buy; Electrex, Moose or original KLR? Mine burned out last Sunday on a ride!

We see them often on eBay, and if it was parted out from a new KLR, then it'll likely be a good deal.

The Electrosport (formerly Exlectex, I think...) ones have sometimes been described as "unreliable," but then the next guy has no problems, so who knows? The 260-somthing watt ones have been out for a while, but the 400-watt ones are relatively untested.

Make sure you don't have some other electrical problem before you fry another stator.

Good luck.

Life is a mortal adventure. Don't avoid all the risks.

I say that unless you need the extra power, go with an original. Seems like a lot of folks have problems with the aftermarket units.

Are you planning on making TdP?

stator and tdp

Yeah, buddy I'm going to try and make it. My problem is that my son has gone back to MTSU and I don't know yet if he will be able to run the store for me on Saturday. If he can't I won't be able to make it.

I think I have come to the same conclusion as you did on the stator. Just put the Kawa unit back in and live with the lower output. I doubt if I would ever utilize the extra power anyway.

New stator

I was heading up a mountain road and about 100 yds from the top the KLR just died. It didn't sputter or miss, it just stopped. I tried starting it several times but it would never fire. I tried bump starting the bike several more times as I glided back down the mountain. No luck! My local shop looked at it and said the charging side of the stator was ok but the side that fired the engine was dead. He said there was no way to separate the two since they are made together. The only solution is a new stator. He is certain that is the problem. He has checked everything else and that was the only thing that was bad. He just dosn't know what to advise me to do about a higher output stator as he has no experience with them. Any thoughts?

Stator

Paint Doc:

I never knew that there were two (2) different sides to the stator. Has any of our "Guru's" commented on this or better yet have you gotten a second opinion?

I don't know any thing about the stator. But it's too late to worry about as I have already had it replaced with a Kawa unit. I needed to get back on the road and didn't want to take a lot of time researching it. I decided on the Kawa unit because they are usually very dependable even if they don't have as high an output as the aftermarket stators.
