KLR idles at 3k rpm .. normal?

i just bought a 2001 KLR a few days ago, finally got her on the road today and noticed that at idle she's running 3,000 rpm's. when i put it in first it drops to 1k or so immediately.

is this normal behavior? my mechanical skills are weak to non-existant, any help much appreciated.

Nope... it should idle at 1000-12000 rpms.

A lot of the time when this happens it is the plastic piece on the choke that goes into the carb.

Second check would be the idle screw on the side of the carb, but make sure the choke isn't messed up first.

Warning! Any tinkering and or adjustments with or on a KLR650 is deemed habit forming in the State of Kalifornia and other territories. All tinkering should be done at ones own risk and with the understanding that you will almost immediately be overtaken by strange urges to remove, modify, cut/strengthen, replace and upgrade almost anything and everything in sight and some things not in sight. You have been warned!!

 Have fun!

Need more info Johnny. Here's a start for ya. Check your choke and cable for proper adjustment. Turn down your idle. Brass looking adjuster screw on the R/H side of your carb. Warm your bike good then turn it down to about 1200 to 1400 rpm. Hope that helps.

OOPS. Sorry Daddyjoe I just saw that you said the same thing.
