On with the Dash Saga,

I am now looking for a high quality, small LED voltage meter to put on the dash. If you have a good suggestion bring it on.

If you have the space I went with a 2" automotive version with needle easy to see and read and is almost indestructable. They also make them in the mini sizes if you don't have the big boy dash.....lol. I'm cheating, I have a Britannia Composites XS fairing with their larger dash....which gives me mountains of space.....lol.

Good Afternoon Willys,

That is my dream dash. I want to complete the 1700 mile ride in July before I purchase that dash. If I enjoy the long haul on this KLR 650, then I will purchase that dash with the dual beam/high/low and then I wont have to worry about space.

Question, if you hook the meter directly to the battery it will continue to draw power. How do you avoid this?

I like the single large multi-color LED Doesn't wash out in the bright light as bad as the colored digital units I have tried. Easy to install.

Wansfel,

I was unable to find the item on ebay, they say it has moved.

Jeepsandbikes,

this is an option that would be multi functional. It is kinda long but would work.

Electrical Connection has a LED battery voltage monitor. It is a single LED which glows different colors for different voltages. Green above 13, amber 11.9 to 11.5, red below 11.5. It is very compact, just a 1/4'' flushmount LED. I saw it on AVisciousCycle's web site and Electrical Connection's site for 29.95.

Justjeff,

Pure simplicity, I am not sure i could handle remembering the color codes other than green is go. It would be unobtrusive. I shall think on it.

That looks like the same one I bought. Ipaid $8 delivered but I've seen them for $4-$6 routinely.

Waterproof, big/bright, easy to install. I figured at that price, how could I go wrong?

So far, so good, though the commenter who mentioned the washout in daylight was correct. Super bright at night, sometimes tough to see in direct sunlight. May build a small shade for it...

That is the very reason I never bought one, . . . . Sorry about that...augh!
I went into it with my eyes open (mostly). I just figured that if anyone could properly seal it up that I'd be equal to the task.

I really think there is a market for a 3-function display that really works for motorcycles at a reasonable price. (I don't need the colored lights along with the volt display and I don't need the black ice alarm or stopwatch.)

I bought mine knowing the water issue , i tucked mine inside the fairing so its out of direct contact with nearly everything . i was thinking of making a small clear cover for it , for the 30 $ if it does its job for a season or two , its paid for itself .
ebay has hundreds of them , i even found a volt/amp one i was eyeballing . I dont know why someone has not made a multi multi function waterproof meter ..

They probably have and sell them to the Beemer croud as they are so expensive! lol....I find it hard to believe no-one has done it yet either. It really wouldn't take that much when you have it apart I would think to carefully epoxy it with some sort of clear resin...?

The problem is the buttons and switches (see list above). They all have contacts on the circuit board and they all require movement outside the case. The 4 or so sliders are, I think, most challenging, but the buttons are also a challenge.

I, too, thought it "wouldn't take much". But when I saw the actual pieces -- and the order in which they had to be reassembled -- it was more difficult than I imagined.
