Average Travel Range for KLR?

I was surprised to have to go on reserve at only 165 miles. The tank took 3.5 gallons at the gas station 3 blocks from where I ran out of gas. How far can you go on reserve without having to resort to tipping the bike over to get those last few ounces of fuel... :???:

THANKS -

Thats not right....

I would start watching for my bike to start sputtering between 300 and 330 miles before reserve.

I averaged anywhere from 48 to 54 MPG.

Was your tank really full? Is your odometer right? Have you adjusted your fuel mixture screw?

I get about 190 to 200 before I hit reserve and then it takes about 4.2 to 4.3 gal or so. That's with carb mods, open airbox, etc.

+1 on what FFJoe said. If everything is good there I'd check your petcock/ fuel pickup tube for debris. Your mileage is 47.1 which is OK so it may be that your petcock/fuel pickup has a problem. You shouldn't be hitting res. at 3.5 gal. Good luck.

The tank was filled to top at the last fill up, I'm sure. If you do the math, I got 47mpg for those 165 miles based on a 6 gallon tank. I think it has to do with the height of the fuel tank pickup. I talked to one other KLR guy who experienced the same thing, reserve at about 170 miles. Let's see if your experience or our experience is most common...

Reserve at 182 freeway miles at 75-80 mph with +11" windscreen (if that matters), 25 lbs of rear rack luggage, and me weighing 210 lbs.

Does your gas tank have a big dent in it  .

You shouldn't be hitting reserve at 3.5 gallons. I hit reserve at a little more than 5 gallons used.
