Chirping noise from engine.

So I have recently acquired this fine 07 with 15k on it. It has the doo done with the good spring from EM. (I verified it with my own eyes). I haven't plated it yet cuz I've got 2 other bikes already and I've been going thru this one to make sure its in good shape. So I took it on a 2 mile ride round the block and it started making a chirp occasionally. It developed into a constant chirp roughly half engine speed. Probably valves right. I'm about to pull off the right side clutch cover to check for a plugged up oil screen, and I'll also pull off the valve cover to inspect the top end.
Yes, i did put oil back in it after checking the doohickey and I double checked the oil before and after the ride. Anybody notice this kind of noise just before a mechanical failure?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Since you've used the word "chirp" to describe the sound I'm thinking "tweety" has struck. A sound made by the stock muffler maybe?

Its got a Leo Vince x3 on it. This was definitely coming from the engine. Seemed like 'up top' or 'in front'. Got the strainer out and it wasn't plugged but had some gray rtv and small slivers of hard black plastic behind it, rather than in it.

Oh well, that was the first thing that came to mind. Is the noise independent of whether the bike is rolling or not? Just trying to rule out the easy things first.

Yeah, but the easy things are no fun to figure out and repair. While tearing the engine apart to diagnose a mystery "chirp", that is probably nothing, is a good way to spend a rainy Sunday. Since I can't paint the house, I can replace all the seals and gaskets on this motor that doesn't (didn't) leak. Now that I have taken off the gas tank, exhaust, both side covers, valve cover, carb, starter, oil tube, oil pump, cam caps and tube, and the radiator, I can replace that water pump seal.

Timely post Spaz....my 04 just started doing the same thing. Mid range rpms, definately coming from engine area (right side I think).

I replaced my clutch cable with a new one and also my throttle cables but I can't see how that would contribute to the noise.

Anybody?

I'll let you know what i find out. I have to put it all back together when the new gaskets and seal come in. I will hook up an oil pressure gauge too. I cant say for sure but it looks like i may not have had oil at the cam lobes. But it looks like i had oil everywhere else. Lobes felt dry but didnt look damaged.

Spaz,
With the engine running, just loosen the cylinder head oil line banjo bolt. If OIL oozes out, ALL is OK, up there. It really DOES NOT take much FLOW to keep the camshafts HAPPY.
pdwestman

ps, read OIL pressure, how much you got?

Ok, good info, thanks. Now that i have it all back together i will try loosening that bolt, tomorrow after work maybe. Everything looked fine in the head, oil & water pumps, clutch, starter... I read in some other thread somewhere that a doohickey in need of adjustment/loosening can cause that chirping noise. Well ill see what it does this week.

I have noticed on some DOO's that when the torsion spring is installed they hit the back of the starter gear's spokes. I have seen two do this and I had to deepen the groove that the torsion spring sits in to get it to stop hitting the starter gear. Not sure why it's like this but so far 2 have been. It's a pain in the rear to have to go back in, so now I spin each starter gear before going to the next stage of installation.
