Shim and bucket problem

I'm having some problems with valve shimming. I used Marknet to check the valve clearances on my 2001 KLR650. The bike has less than 8,000 miles
on it. The problem is my valve clearances are tight. Well let's put it this way,
the right intake is okay at .006in. , left intake is a tight .004in. , right exhaust
is a tight .006in. , and the last one the left exhaust, I couldn't even get a .002in.
feeler gauge to slide in and that's the smallest I have. The big problem was getting the shim out of the left intake ( the .000 clearance one) . The lifter
cup would barely move to get the notch located so I could pop out the shim.
I had to lift the cam out of the way to get to the notch and pry it out. I'm very worried about this situation.
My shims were 270's and one 275. Is that normal sizes? On the Forum everyone is talking about 250's. Help!
I don't understand how the bike ran so well with this situation. I just purchased this bike last week and wanted to check things out since it's a rainy Sunday. Can you offer any help or advice?
Thank you for your time.

It's normal to lift the cams to get the shims out. I do this but leave the chain and chain damper (late models) in place. Some people suggest removing the cams every time. No worries. I also answered in the other thread. Just adjust as normal. I'd try a 255 in the bucket in question. Be sure all the shims are clean when you put them back in, with a light coat of oil. Also be sure the shims are properly seated in the buckets, and carefully use light pressure to seat the cam caps. If they don't seat easy, something is wrong, start over or ask for help.

all the best,

Mike

Welcome aboard brat! There is at least one other KLR rider in Tracy and a couple that live in Livermore.
