Choke Problem

I have a 1995 Malibu Barbie KLR650. I have been having problems with the Choke when starting the bike. When I push the choke full on to start the bike cold it will not start, I have to pull it back to about half way and then it starts fine but my idle does not seem high enough when I compare it to my 2006 KLR650. I cleaned the carb/jets and reassembled everything including checking the carb plunger. When I got it all back together the choke acted the same and the bike would only start when the choke was 1/2 open then once running if I tried to open the choke up more the bike would just quit. The bike runs great but I just cannot get the choke to work as it should. Any ideas.

Does it run well? Is your only complaint the position of the choke lever when you go to start the bike?

If everything works and you can start it, I'm not sure I'd futz with it.

I would agree with kyxon. It doesn't much matter how the choke lever is oriented in its travel as long as you're able to get the thing started and it runs okay once it warms up for a couple of minutes.

I set my idle at around 1200rpms, but mine's a Gen2 and the called-for range is 1200-1400: not sure about a Gen1. You might want to verify yours is idling within the acceptable range.

If you're able to utilize the choke lever to get it started then have no complaints with how it runs otherwise, I would just get used to fiddling with the choke lever a little to see what it likes, especially if you've confirmed nothing is broken/binding with the mechanism/cable/lever.

Nothing I own with a smal gas engine with a manually-manipulated choke holds true to the starting procedure as proclaimed by the manufacturer. Each one has its own idiosyncracies and demands and none of them will start if I do exactly what the placards on them say to do. I've learned what they like when it comes to the choke so approach them each differently. My KLR's about the same.

Yes the bike runs great and yes it was sitting for a while so I guess that my only gripe is that the choke doesn't work as when I bought the bike but it does allow me to start it and it runs fine thereafter. My idle is set at 1300. Thx for the replies...
