Normal operating temperture?

My KLR seems to run a little hot. If I've been riding for about 30 minites and have to stop for around 20 - 30 seconds It goes above half way on the temp gauge and the fan kicks on. Is this typical? How warm do they normally run, and if they do run hot are there any ways to make it run cooler? I like to ride offroad but when I ride under 20 mph hour it seems to get hot to quick. Any info would be usefull.

The fan on mine kicks in a little above 1/2 on the guage. It hardly ever comes on commuting but slow off-roading will have it cycling off and on. I don't think I've seen the guage over 2/3.
By contrast, my DRz fan hardly ever comes on. Maybe because I'm giong faster on it in the dirt?

What are you using for oil?
Mine also kicks in at the half way mark but never goes above it thanks to the fan. I wouldn't worry unless it climbs to 3/4 or above.
The better quality of oil the cooler it stays. Also KLRs are the harley of dirt, check your oil level often.

When sitting at a stop sign it does go above half way. I live in southern indianapolis and normally south out of the city for trips through southern Indiana. After I hit the city again the first couple of stop signs and My fans kicking on. It's not even summer yet. I'm a little nervous about what might happen when it hits 90 degrees. Whats the best type of engine oil to run, price is not an issue. What other methods are used to keep cool?

I noticed a lot of the riders using 20/50. Check your owners manual for the factory suggestions. I have riden in some pretty warm locations 100 plus and have not had a problem with the temp going much above 1/2. My oil has ranged from 10/40, sythetic, 20/50. Also make sure your coolant is full and fresh. These bikes are pretty indestructable with basic care.

If you adjust the idle mixture screw on the carb it helps the bike run a little cooler because they come from the factory very lean.

In city traffic and off-roading mine will hit 2/3rds before fan kicks on then cycles as needed. If doing slow tough off-roading, it can hit 3/4's easy.

Using 10/40 AMSOIL right now. Haven't checked coolant forever.

It is normal for a KLR to run near or above half way on the temp. The fan will (if its working right) kick on when a certin temp is reached. I(t will also kick on a lot of times when you shut it off.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life.
