mixing oil

I have some left over Honda 10W40 and Rotella 15w-40 diesel oil. Is it ok to mix the two ?

I know everyone has opinions on oil so it's always a touchy subject. Personally I have mixed grades of oil before with no ill effects (to my knowledge anyway!).

I would never mix synthetic with dino oil though, not sure how they would get along together...

I've mixed before and not had any adverse effect. But the old adage of "any oil is better than no oil" applies.

Gray-haired riders donít get that way from pure luck.

Amen to that! I'd run pretty much anything in a pinch

Honda oil will make your engine run backwards!

I used to mix on occasion but don't anymore. Small amounts of left over oil gets used in the lawn mower or snowblower.

Stew: synthetic oil is compatible with dino juice so no problem mixing the two.

Good to know, thanky
I just wasn't sure with the different base stocks, thought they might separate or go weird or something...

On a side note, I just bought a 5 liter jug of Rotella yesterday. I think it was about $23. I'm gonna start buying it by the 5 gal pail I think, lot cheaper!

Mixing if fine. I've purposely mixed 10W40 with 20w50 to make 15W45. Mixing dino with synthetic is fine too. Then you've just made semi-synthetic, which they already bottle and sell.

I'm with Savage, too.

After reading piles of opinions on the subject that were all over the map, I came to the conclusion that it couldn't possibly be that important, or there would be some semblance of consensus. (Compare to what people say about chain tension, for example, which is basically uniform advice across the board.)

Some people worry about potential interactions between additives in different brands of oil, perhaps reducing the effectiveness of the oil. I've not seen an actual, tested example of that, however.

I bought a spare quart at a moto shop a while ago. They had known brands, and then also Kawasaki and Suzuki branded oil. So I asked which was cheaper, and they were all $4.99 (probably because they were all the same oil, I'd wager.) So of course I bought a quart of Kawasaki and my friend bought a quart of Suzuki for her DR-Z400SM.

But who knows what will happen when I put that in with the Valvoline I have in there now... Maybe they'll fight!

The only thing people agree on is that you should change your oil every 3000 miles; some people go 6000 on synthetic. And that you should change your filter every other oil change; some people do it every oil change. And that any oil is better than low oil.
