Bike only runs without gas line attached

I'm hoping one of you KLR gurus can help with this one. Here is the story so far...

I was riding today on a short trip back from my parents. It was hot (over 90) and I had been riding about 3 miles. I was at a stoplight, and the bike just died. Just like I had shut it off. I tried numerous times to restart but it just kept turning over.

At first I thought it had overheated, but the temp gauge didn't show that. After pushing it into a parking lot under a tree, I waited awhile and tried starting it again. No dice. It was almost as if it was either getting no spark or the gas was bad. I had never had a problem with the bike up to this point. It's a 2003 and I've had it about 3 months.

After getting it towed home, I came to the conclusion that it must be the gas. I popped off the gas line hose from the value, connected another hose and preceeded to pump some gas into a gas can by turning the engine over. The gas came out fine. No blockage from the tank.

As I was doing this, wonder of wonders, the bike started without the gas line attached! It sat there idling fine. I revved it a few times and all seemed fine. Just for kicks, I decided to burn out all the fuel from the line, and then reattach the hose to the tank. This took about 3-4 minutes.

I did that, turned on the gas, and tried to start it. No start! Just turning over and over. So what did I do? I closed the valve, popped off the hose and turned it over again... it starts! It runs until the gas line is empty.

I apparently have a bike that only seems to run without the gas line attached.

Any ideas out there???

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like there is something wrong with the petcock, if I am not mistaken, there is a vacuum line that helps close off the petcock when the motor is not running to keep fuel from dumping into the cylinder or on the ground if the needle valve were to become stuck open. Check your vacuum lines to make sure they aren't pinched or have some cracking. I am sure there will be some other guys with much better idea of what is going on and will give a response soon. Good luck with the problem.

Or your tank isn't venting, and the gas isn't getting a chance to go down the fuel line. It takes only a little bit of vaccum to stop the flow.
Next time it stops, crack your gas cap open and see if it'll start then.

+1 on the tank not venting. Also check the vent tube from the carb.if its plugged (or melted together) it will do the same thing.
