Bike wont start

I need a little help! I have a 1987 klr650 and I recently replaced the gas tank and cleaned the carb after the guy I bought it from let it sit for 5 years.
I had it running and I probably put 200 miles on it and it just wouldn't start one day, after some studying, I discovered the kickstand switch was bad. I bypassed the switch and it ran for another week. I won't start again and I'm stumped. It is getting gas to the carb and the plug has plenty of fire, is there anything else electrical that would cause this?

Wouldnt the bike still start in neutral even if the clutch safety switch was bad?

These sorts of problems are always hard to diagnose. So try these steps;
1. what is the bike doing before you hit the start button?
- is it in nutural (kind of obvious but )
- are you sure the kickstand bypass is still good?
- what lights are on? Do turn signals and everything work? if not maybe the battery is too low to start?
2. when you hit start is anything happening?
- do the light dim?
- are there any noises?
3. Can you bump start the bike?
get it rolling and pop the clutch

If non of these help you might need to start chasing wires. You know make sure fusses are good, grounding wire if good, nothing is corroded or pinched.
Wish you good luck and hope this helps.

I assume the older bikes have a nutural light? If so, if it is on the bike "should" start as long as you kickstand bypass is good.

It does have a neutral light and while the bike is in neutral the battery is good and strong as it turns over good. I would assume the bypass around the kickstand safety switch is still good as I cut both wires and wired them together. What wires do I chase? If any

I'd do what makes sence. Start at the starter on the engine. Is it getting power when you hit the electric start? If not keep running backwards till you find power and try to diagnose it from there.
I had a similar issue with a friends bike. We tore the thing apart coming up with very imaginative reasons it wouldn't start. We worked till it was just getting dark when I saw a spark fly under the seat. We then realized the the grounding wire was loose and the bike was it barely getting ground. Bike ran fine after tightening the ground. LOL
If all else fails try bump starting it to confirm that it will still run and isn't a mechanical issue.
