New KLR owner

I just purchased a 1998 KRL 650 with about 9000 miles. The bike runs and drives good as far as I can tell. Not knowing any history on the bike, other than the oil was changed every 3k miles, I would like to know what kinds of things I should as should plan on doing to the bike (maintenance, adjustments, ect...). I have also been reading alot about the "doohickey", is this somthing that I should plan on changing out, and if so how much should I plan on spending if I had a shop do it for me (I dont know if I want to tackle somthing like that myself). I was also wondering roughly how much up/down play there should be in the chain? I paid $2300 for the bike, it has very minor cosmetic damage and runs great, was it a good buy?

If your happy with it ,it's a good buy.You didn't say were your from, but there are plenty of people on here who will help change to do,and yes it needs done.I have the tools if you need to borrow them, and it is a fairly simple process.Someone is always having a tech day,and there are several, and I mean several sites with info on the klr.Go to daadyjoes site,he has the most extensive list of websites for the klr I know of.You landed in one of the best forums, imho, for friendliness and help out also has lots of good people with knowledge along with hondos klr site.I have used all of these sites for hands on help by just posting I need help right in the middle of something and got answers in just a couple of minutes.Enjoy your klr and welcome aboard

10-4 on doing the doo. That should be first and foremost.
Also go to this site as well as daddyjoe's, Mark has great printable step by step procedures for most of the important mods that need to be done. We have changed my buddies doo, with the help of daddyjoe, it is 'not' as intimidating as it appears to be. My new 07 will be done soon as I get the part ordered from Arrowhead. Sounds to me like you got a good deal. Ride it and enjoy the freedom of going where you want. I love mine.

Previous ride was a 2007 KLR Black/Silver, I miss it..
Looking to get back into KLR's sometime soon.
