Skid plate

Hello Fellows
I am new to this forum and I am a happy owner of a KL650 Tengai from -90.
I wonder if anybody has any suggestions how to replace the plastic skid plate , which I find quite useless.
So, come on with your experience!

I'd look for an aftermarket metal one, or if you're the creative type, like me. just make your own. ideally, I'd have a diamond plate skid plate on mine.

I really dont understand the idea behind putting a PLASTIC, of all materials skid plate on a bike that is likely to be offroad a lot and beat on.

Do You have any drawings or pictures of your plate?

I also have one from happy-trail. I'm very happy with mine. My dad bought one from dualstar and it gives you much less coverage than around the engine than mine. The one from happy-trail is much bigger and higher quality in my opinion.

Sorry folks, but I cannot really find a plate that fits my old bike on the sortiment from Happy-trail. My bike is from 1990 and it is a Tengai version, with the plastic plate underneath the engine?!

Tommen,
I just looked again. The plate is designed for the 1987 - 2007 KLR 650. There is a black one at the bottom of the first KLR page. $69.95. There is also an unpainted one in there somewhere.
ALL KLRs came with the worthless plastic plate.

I think since the tengai has such a different looking plastic plate on the bottom than a standard KLR, he probably isn't sure if a standard type skid plate will work.

Previous ride was a 2007 KLR Black/Silver, I miss it..
Looking to get back into KLR's sometime soon.

It seems that the distance between the mounting holes in the front is wider on a
Tengai. I have measured it to be 140mm between the holes in the front.

by diamond plate, I am referring to a sheet of steel that has little diamond shapes on one side, it looks really cool and is generally quite durable. the picture below is what diamond plate looks like. I prefer fabricating my own stuff over buying since I can make it as tough as I want to and not have to completely redesign what the prebuilt stuff has to offer.
