Hydraulic Clutch

I think my clutch cable is stretching and I'm thinking about a hydraulic clutch. With some of the out of the way places I've been lately I'd hate to be stuck with a broken cable or changing one in the wilderness.

Is DualStar the only place that sells them for the KLR?

Anybody got one? How do you like it?

And...
What did you use for barkbusters/hand guards?

The one they sell at DualStar says it won't work with the stock hand guards. I'm thinking its because of the way the handguards mount.

Thanks,
Brian

Brian,
It's pretty normal for a cluch cable (or any cable) to stretch a bit. I think I've adjusted my freeplay twice in 12,000 miles.. I consider it regular maintenance. I'll replace it when I do my 20K service as a precaution, but it's more than likely not needed even then.. I do blast it with lube every 5K miles, too..

Are you concerned about the clutch breaking in the middle of nowhere, or just interested in a juice clutch??

I'm more worried about it breaking.

I think it did stretch a bit more on this last trip. I've been doing more techincal riding on Sundays and think I might be putting the cable through its paces.

I'll go see if I can adjust it and see if it inspires a little more confidence.
What do you use to lube the cable?

The riding season is almost over up here, at least over night trips for me. So I won't be in the middle of nowhere on the bike for a while. I have until next season to make the switch if I decide to.

However, i could always kill a Caribou with my leatherman and use some of its gut for a new clutch cable.

Aaron (whom you met) picked up a cable lube attachment and we both use Chain Wax on the cables.

Chances are, you're getting a little bit of stretch and a little bit of clutch fiber plate wear. Both normal.. Even more so on a new bike like yours..

Remember, there's two locations to adjust. The bottom one adjusts the location that your clutch is engaged, and the top adjusts your freeplay. Freeplay should be around 1-2mm at the lever.

Caribou jerky.. MMMMMMM

Dude,

Thanks for the tips. I ordered the manuals today (should have done it like three months ago)

I've heard of this cable attachment you speak of. I'll have to find one

What are you awake for.
Its like 3:00am there.

How could I sleep, knowing you were in need of help??

The lube attachement is basically 2 tubes that are attached. One gets the end of the straw from a can of lube and the other clamps over the end of the cable, and has a small screw to hold it there.

Should be less than $5 up in your neck of the woods..
