3000 RPM...Help

So I recently bought a new KLR 650(2007), which is now my pride and joy. My 650 is now at about 1200miles and pushing strong. There is just one problem - 3000RPM noise. When I reach 3000RPM my bike whines, after I pass 3000 no noise at all. The noise does, however, return when I decrease my RPM and pass 3000 again (this goes for ALL my gears, but especially third gear). I donít know what this is. Its sounds like at high pitch metallic whine. Itís quite but just loud enough to hear, it almost sounds like keys jingling in your pocket. Does anyone else have this problem? Iím a college student and I really donít want to screw up my bike with something that could have been prevented. Thanks guys. It could always be just my 650 still breaking-in, but after the 1000 mile mark I thought it was over.

Not that this will fix the sound, but have you changed the oil yet? Usually good idea to do it at 500 than again maybe at 1500 then 3000. I have an 07 I bought back in April.. This things make so many noises it is hard to pinpoint what it could be, I have a rattle in the cowl dash area now that was not there when I bought it. Have tightened the bolts over and over and checked everything but all I can tell is the headlight cover slightly vibrating against the cowl at certain RPM's. Also the more miles I put on mine the more weird noises I hear. I would think it is something that rattles or is rubbing metal to metal at that certain harmonic that 3000 RPM makes. I just rolled over 4000 miles on mine. It is also a good idea to take all bolts out that you can get too and put blue lock tight on them and retightening them..KRL's are notorious for causing bolts to vibrate loose. You also need to get the doohickey done. Go to this website if you haven't already found it and you can read up on a lot of the upgrades and things that need to be done to your new KLR.

Yes I did change it and the oil filter it helped a little in the beginning, but once my 650 got a little warm...here comes the noise again. Think the oil might not be thick enough? I put 10W-40 and its been close to 102 degrees every day outsideÖif that makes a difference at all.

I know a lot of guys use Rotella and synthetic oils, but all I have ever used has been Penzoil Motorcycle rated 10W40 oil.

The fairing on the right side ( as you sit on the bike) has a screw in the top front that screws into the gas tank that has been found to be just a little too long.It causes a sound like you are describing, to fix mine I put a washer from a water faucet between the screw and the fairing.

But like DX said all the screws and bolts work loose and should be blue lock tited.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life.

I had a similar 'keys jingling' noise on one of mine. It was difficult to locate the source while riding. I took the entire front faring off and went for a ride; noise gone.I re-attached, taking extra care on the fitment, bent some of the brackets to line up better, shimmed where needed. Got rid of the noise.

I just changed the coolant on my 01 the other day and when I was done...yep, you guessed it, an RPM related rattle.

Mine was do loud I thought something serious was broke.

It turned out to be the screen in front of the radiator, I just loosened up the screws and repositioned it slightly and retightened.

Rattle gone.

I found it by revving till the sound started and with gloves on started pressing on things till I heard a change in the sound.

On a side note, I noticed a brand new 07 at the dealer the other day and it didn't have the rubber grommet in that bottom radiator screen bracket. That is gonna be a head scratcher for the new owner someday whe it starts rattling.

Talking Noise

I had a noise similar to this found it coming from the exhaust support. Found the bolt loose lock tight and tightened no longer noisy. I would check all mount brackets as they will make a jingle noise when loose and only at certain RPMs.
