Questions about rust on chain, brake rotors

Hey all,

So this year I couldn't find a garage to store my bike in for the winter, so I covered it in a bike cover and hoped for the best. It seems OK, but the brake rotors have some rust on them and so does the chain. Do you think this will be a big problem? Am I right that the rust will scrape off of the rotors after using the brakes a few times? As for the chain, it was new last year, and the rust seems somewhat superficial. I can still wiggle all of the links. IM thinking of just cleaning it with WD-40 and a tooth brush... thoughts?
Weather's finally nice, can't wait to start riding!!

Cheers

if someone who is allowed to post URLS could post it that'd be great!

No big problem, IMHO; if so, I got it, too!

Wouldn't put any lubricant on brake rotors myself; YMMV.

Plenty of Google "hits" and video clips exist on chain cleaning and maintenance.

Kaseman,
The brake rotors will be just fine, with a ride around the block.
My EBC 320mm rotor, rusts a little every rain storm.

As to the chain, should have lubed it last fall, but 'oh well'.
The links are free, must be a good 'o'-ring chain. WD-40 or chain lube.
Check your oil level, battery fluid level, your tire pressures and go ride. Scrub the rust off the brake rotors, by dragging the brakes a 'bit'.

I have heard of rust. I was taught that it requires moisture which is probably why I have never actually seen it. I always thought it was an urban legend like rain. Guess we miss out on all kinds of cool stuff in Phoenix.

Kaseman, arent you the same Kaseman that cracked his sump plug back in 2013? I read your entire thread a few days back when same thing happened to me (you can check out my sorry tale just below in this forum.)

So how did it turn out? Is it holding so far?

Given my damage is definitely different (for the worse.)

hey stirletz, yes that's me. the JB seems to be holding up well. There is a tiny leak, but not enough to warrant adding back any more oil between oil changes. Checked out your thread. Seems your condition looks quite a bit worse than mine. I feel for you, man, I was there last year. it's no fun having your bike out of commission at the beginning of the season. I am really no expert but I agree that your problem might be a little beyond a fix by JB weld. best of luck
