Pain in the a*s choke

I own a 2000 KLR650 and just recently bought a new one my dad rides. His came with the upgraded switch housing with push to cancel turn signal and passing light button. The original choke position is relocated to right side of the switch housing and for some reason it doesnt work. We pulled it off and if you pull the cable with pliers it pulls the spring and returns. It also doesnt fit into the choke lever housing very well either. Is it cause the extra overall length of the choke cable? Its about 2 inches closer to the carb. I dont see how this can affect the pull of the cable but Im having a bit of a brain fart here. Any ideas? Also, my bike is the same year color everything, but the carb is different. The choke screws in on the right side of the bike and mine is on the left. is that common? I am now going to take the time to complain about how much of a pain in the a&s it is to screw the choke into the side of the carb. How small are their fingers, it sucks!
