Doo Spring Tension

Hey all, well I have just found out a new something on my 08, as with all previous years the doo hicky ma bob has issues after so many miles, well I was talkin to my bro at the local dealer where I baught my bike and he was tellin me that roughly every 500 to 600 miles ya gotta loosin that bolt to the spring to let the tension off so it wont wear prematurely,he loosined and retightened bolt on the klr he was ridding and a noise it was makin went away, I dont have any pics to show where the bolt is but if ya look in the general area of the shifter roughly 3 inch's towards the front there be a rubber plug lookin thing, it pops right off and there be a 8mm socket size bolt in there,loosin afew turns and tighten her back up,makes sense, its not a self adjusting set up, thats as much info as I have, anything anyone else can add would help...

The owner's manual should have a page or two about that. I do mine each oil change. Start it up for a couple of minutes to warm things up, turn it off, then I lean it to the right the handle bar holding the bike up against a garage wall or garage door. Loosen the adjuster bolt a half a turn or so, and I tap the engine case with a rubber mallet. Make sure not to over tighten the screw, it should be done at about 69 inch pounds, same as the case bolts. Anymore torque and the bolt tends to push into the soft metal of the adjuster which could cause a premature stress area that could crack or would not allow the adjuster to adjust right in the future. My factory one already had a heck of a dimple from the bolt when I replaced it.

When you loosen the 8mm bolt it allows the spring to pull the doo which tightens the chain.

I do mine with the bike straight up, (some say it being leaned over causes the doo to bind an that is what causes them to break) the key (I think) is not loosing the 8mm bolt too much.
