Everybody has their own favorite, but I don't think it matters what kind of oil you use as long as it adheres to the specs set forth in the Owner's Manual as far as type and viscosity.

I personally use Rotella 15W-40 "diesel oil" because this is farm country, all the farmers use it in their equipment and it comes rather cheap in gallon jugs. I can find gallons of it for around $10 sometimes.

Any kind of slippy stuff will work... Only thing you have to watch out for is friction modifiers, they can cause clutch slippage (so I'm told, never experienced it).

Perhaps the most important thing on KLR's though is to keep an eye on the oil level... Nothing kills a KLR faster than running them low on oil, and some of them seem quite fond of it, especially during higher rpm slab riding!

I personally use Rotella 15W40 as well, but have used Castrol and numerous other brands. Haven't really noticed a difference with any of them so it's pretty much personal preference.

quick search on the forum here will tell you more than you need or really want to know about oil.

Mtgrizzlymn,
Believe it or Not, I will endorse Genuine KAWASAKI 10W40, refined by, I don't know who.
Check out my oil analysis, on 'Camshaft Oil Pressure, 2hr ride data'.

Oil

I used synthetic 10-40 on my last change. I have NOT noticed any clutch slippage, but I am happy to report the cruising temp is at the lower end of the gauge. I don't think it hurt the clutch function, but my bike runs cooler...as a
Long as I can avoid sitting at long red lights.
Just what I found out.

My 06 KLR Just turned 10,000 km roughly 6200 miles and I switched to Royal purple 10 W 40 and have noticed a drop in operating temps.

I've seen this admonition uttered like Gospel, myself, but . . . know of no instances of any heartbreak from using "friction modifiers" in oil fed to a KLR650. Further, I know of no prohibition against "friction modifiers" or "energy-conserving" oils in any Kawasaki literature, including owner's and service manuals.

Kawasaki only recommends API Service Codes and ambient temperature-driven viscosities. Within this broad prescription, warranties are honored, and I believe KLR650 engines will live out their nominal service lives.

Not sure what a "friction modifier" is; men say zinc compounds are friction modifiers; Mobil 1 is laced with zinc. I would not run, screaming, from the room if I were offered Mobil 1 for my bike. YMMV!
