Knocking/Pinging

2007 with 22,000 miles. Noticing a knocking/pinging sound under medium load/acceleration. No recent changes and it has done for several tanks of gas so do not think fuel related. Had bike for 4+ years and never noticed it. Any suggestions?

Have you physically looked at the 'Engine Balancer Chain Adjustment Lever', aka the "Doo-Hickey"? Inside the LH engine cover.
And I do not mean, just attempted to adjust. I mean Physical Inspection.

I know the Doo can cause rough idling but knocking too? Been a while since I even changed the plug, might be something as simple as that.

Did you, rotate the engine CCW to TDC mark before you attempted to make that adjustment? If not, try it.
If the engine comes up against compression and turns just slightly Backwards as we shut it OFF, the chain slack will be on the wrong side of things.

Oh come on now,
Take Both of the Plastic Screws out of the LH engine cover.
Look thru the top 'small hole' and put a 19mm socket with ratchet or breaker handle in the 'Large center Hole'. Turn LEFT! CCW!

ps, do I need to say, 'Loosen 2 turns, then just "snug" the doo-hickey lock-bolt'. 69 INCH POUNDS, if you have a 'small' torque wrench. Just 'snug'.

A bit cranky, Paul. ;-)

FWIW, the spring is easy to see with just the stator cover off and a good eye, holding your tongue just right and a mirror through the round opening in front of 8 o'clock of the rotor will allow one to see back to inspect the Doohickey (lever).
