I haven't seen too many 40T sprockets. Only suggestion I have is to contact Sprocket Specialists. They will make you what you want.

I have no affiliation and have done no business with them so can't comment on that.

Hi Aussifish,
Do you know what front sprocket you have?
The stock gearing is 15/43. If you are still running a 15t front you can go to an easily obtainable 16t front combined with a 43t rear and achieve the same gearing without the hassle. Divide the number of teeth on the rear sprocket by the number of teeth on the front to get the ratio.
15/43...2.867:1 stock
15/40...2.667:1 you
16/43...2.667:1 alternate easily accessible choice
The alternate would require a new chain as the existing one would be too short. Not sure what shape your existing chain and front sprocket are but if the rear is worn and the rest are the same age they likely need replacing as well anyway.

Best Regards....justjeff

Hi justjeff . I am running a16t on the front 40t on the rear. I have always replaced the chain and both sprockets at the same time.

Thanks for your reply.

That's some seriously tall gearing for a KLR! similar to running a 17t on the front. How do you find it for power for starting out or passing?

I have no problem taking off or passing at 100 km per hour in top gear. I have only put a staintune slip on exaust and a 13inch windshield . No other mods except for my radio. I do a lot of Hyway riding to and from work.
