Back brake got lousy over the last two weeks.

I seem to be trying to figure out my bike as things go wrong with it. My back brake is weak. Checked the brake fluid on the back and it is on the low mark? Is this enough to make the brake work poorly? I am going to bleed them thisweek and replace fluid via Klymer manual. Got 5400 miles on the bike and all but 400 are street miles. Do the pads usually last longer than that. As usual thanks for helping out a guy who wants thttp://www.klrforum.com/images/smilies/action/18.gif
o learn but doesn't know much.

The back brakes are just weak to begin with. Granted I can lock up the rear wheel, but it takes stomping on the pedal to do it. I replaced my rear pads at 6000k miles, thinking they were wore out, but in reality they were only about half wore. You should not be that low on brake fluid, unless your rear pads are completely wore out. Check for leaks, although they would be easy to find. If you plan on bleeding the brakes, then completely bleed the old fluid out till you see new fresh clear fluid, that way you have fresh in the whole system for the rear brakes. Probably wouldn't be a bad thing to go ahead and do the front too.

Previous ride was a 2007 KLR Black/Silver, I miss it..
Looking to get back into KLR's sometime soon.

I'm just now needing brake pads at 11,000 miles. I can't imagine you would need pads or fluid at 5,400. Easiest thing for starters would be to put in some fluid and recheck the brakes on a test run. They definitely are not solid brakes in stock form, but they are very capable.

I have aftermarket pads that I'm getting ready to put on soon, interested to see what difference they make.

Depends on your riding style/weight etc... Mine were just above limit at 5200.

Here's something to think about. When you grease your chain make sure not to get any on the brake disc. I bled my brakes put in new fluid and then decided to check out the disk. It had glob of oil on it. Cleaned it off and guess what? gosh dang I'm dumb.
