K&N air filter

I have a "new to me" 2001 klr. Went to clean the airfilter for the first time and expected a stock foam filter, but the PO changed it to a K&N with no foam precleaner. Since I wasn't sure if the K&N needed oiling I just cleaned it with gas and shot it full of wd40. I looked at the K&N site and around on here last night and seen someone post about oiling it, so will re do it with motor oil next week unless someone knows more about it.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanx

Here are the instructions I have for the searvice and cleaning of K&N filters.
You may want to buy the cleaning/recharge kit though. I purchased mine from KLR650.com along with the filter.

Spray K&N air filter cleaner to both sides of the filter media until it completely saturates the pleated material.
Allow cleaner to soak into the media for 10 minutes to loosen the dirt. Do not let the cleaner dry on the filter.
Rinse off the media with cool low-pressure water. Allow gravity to push dirt out of the filter media by applying water to the clean side of the filter.
Completly rinse the filter until all traces of the cleaner are gone. Shake off excess water and allow to dry.
Apply K&N air filter oil sparingly to the dirty (inlet) side of the air filter. Allow this to set for 20 minutes and touch up any light spots with more oil.

Hope this helps some. I read this right off the instructions sheet for my kit.

You can get the K&N cleaner/oiler kit at just about any auto parts store if you don't want to wait. Maybe even WalMart.
