Stalls when put into gear

Hi, I just bought a 2006 klr650 a couple days ago and due the rain I haven't ridden it much other than the test ride and a few times around the block... it worked fine, but now, all of a sudden when I put it into gear, any gear, from neutral, it stalls as if I am activating some safety cutoff or something... no bad sounds or anything just cuts off...

I am new to these bikes and maybe there is something very obvious but I am stumped and frustrated as I begin to think I bought a problem bike... does anyone have any idea what the problem might be ??? I have searched the forums but nothing comes up in the search relating to this, so any advice anyone has would be greatly appreciated, THANKS!

Yep, sounds like the kickstand safety or clutch safety has gone bad. Typical on these. Most everyone by-passes these switches to keep from having such a problem.

here is a link that will give you step by step instructions for fixing the problem:

Keep us posted on the progress. Also while you are at the site, read up on the other mods too and you will find several others you should do, including the T mod, and idle mixture screw mod.

Previous ride was a 2007 KLR Black/Silver, I miss it..
Looking to get back into KLR's sometime soon.

Whew!

Thanks so much for the info... I was hoping it would be something like that... and I did get it going again, I guess by wiggling all that stuff around... I will study the link you posted and check out the other mods too, Thanks Again!

When you get the chance I suggest taking the seat, side panels, and tank off, and putting some di-electric grease in all of the electrical connections to help seal them from water corrosion and then remove and add blue loc-tite to every screw, bolt and fastener that you can get your hands on. These bikes like to vibrate things loose over time. It is not unknown to have a complete muffler fall off from lost bolts. Just a suggestion to save you from headaches on down the line, plus this time of bonding for you and your bike will get you more knowledgable about the motorcycle.

Thumbs up Thanks Again for the suggestions

...well since the Sun here in Oregon seems to be hiding still, I am finding myself with more time to work on the bike than to ride it, so, I have ordered the "doohicky" kit, tires, K&N filter, and some other gear for upgrades and mods... hopefully by the time the Sun does shine I will also have a mod-ed out KLR to show off... I'll post some pics later, Thanks!
