Speedometer Problem

I Have An 01 With 24900 Miles. Today The Speedometer Locked Up. It Is Froze At 35mph. I Can Be Going 70 On The Interstate Or Stitting At A Stop Sign And The Speedo Reads 35 Mph. The Weird Thing Is That My Odometer Still Works Fine. Any Suggestions Or Ideas What To Check? Thanks!

Updated On Speedo Problem. I Rode 200 Miles On The 4th And About 125 Miles Into The Ride The Speedo Started To Work Perfectly! Then After About 10 To 15 Miles Of Riding The Speedo Froze Up Again. Now The Needle Is Stuck On 65 Instead Of 35mph. And The Odometer Continued To Work Just Fine. Today, I Rode 220 Miles No Change - Still Stuck On 65mph. So When I Got Home I Took The Speedo Cable Off From The Bottom Of The Speedo Cluster And Inspected The Cable. It Looked Just Fine. But Just As Soon As I Pulled The Cable Out Of The Speedo The Needle Dropped To O Mph. While I Had The Cable Off, I Lubed It Up And Put It Back Together. Took Off On A Short Ride - No Change. Still Looking For Advice Before Tearing Into The Speedo Cluster.

I wish I had an answer for you. I haven't heard of many speedos having issues, other than the fact that they're all off a bit. As far as actual failure, I think it's pretty rare.

I know I've seen complete speedo units on eBay.. I guess you can just dig into the unit and see if you can find anything that looks wrong, or just replace it..

I know of a couple places that do BMW motorcycle speedo repairs, but I don't know of anybody that does them for Kawi speedos.

I wish I could be of more help, but other than digging into it yourself, or just replacing it, I can't think of any other options.

This one's at $36 right now. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/87-07...spagenameZWDVW

I guess I'd think about cost vs. repair, also.. If you did find someone to fix it, I bet they wouldn't waste the time to even open the case for $36. Even at $50, it'll be a bargain.

These folks have rebuilt/repaired speedos for me on a couple of project cars/trucks. Good fast service and price was reasonable (?). They'll also calibrate as part of the repair -- you could have the only KLR in the world that shows correct speed!!!!! The price will very likely exceed $100. plus shipping. (their price was "reasonable" based on the replacement cost/availability for the vehicles I was working on)

You might mount a cheap handheld GPS to the bar just for your speed info and then check it out yourself. Might be as simple as a small piece of debris or a loose magnet that you can fix yourself. (the speedo and odo are separate devices, so you know the driving gear and cable are ok)
But if you could buy a working replacement for $50 bucks, that's be the easiest and probably least expensive way to go.

Speedometer problems

Had a similar experience with my KLR a few years back. Cable had gone bad where it entered into the housing. Was not real apparent upon inspection. Replaced it and have had no more problems. I do ocassionally pull the cable out and oil it. Good luck. La mula verde, Katy Tx.
