Has anyone ever had an issue with the battery being low of fluid? over the course of about three or four rides, i could tell it would start weaker and weaker. took batt out and it was darn near empty.

I filled it up with watter and put it on a charger for 2 cycles... cranked right up and is fine so far.

Should i upgrade to the sealed gel type battery? Anyone have any reviews on a good one?

I put off going sealed for no real good reason and ran my stock one dry three times before it finally was shot and then I finally went sealed. For the price, a sealed battery should be the first thing anyone does to a KLR. Got mine from Battery Plus and it was a perfect replacment.

There is another brand floating around that offers a bit more reserve power, but also requires the battery to be installed on it's side and the connecters need modified.

Ordered my Maintenance free battery from the Kaw dealer. It's not a gel like I wanted, but so far it's doing great. The stock batteries are notorious for losing fluid.

Previous ride was a 2007 KLR Black/Silver, I miss it..
Looking to get back into KLR's sometime soon.

Whatever you do stay away from the NAPA gel batteries. They're good for 6 months tops if your lucky. I and a friend had the same gel batteries- He in arkansas and me in ohio- same result.

The Odyssey is the battery that needs to be mounted sideways and you'll need to extend one of the cables.

Got mine from the local Batteries Plus. Can't recall the exact model, they looked it up while I was there.
What replacement batteries are available?
The original battery is a Yuasa YB14L-A2, and there is a Die Hard equivalent at Sears. WalMart also has inexpensive batteries. Yuasa also makes a fully sealed AGM battery that is an exact replacement, the YTX14AHL-BS. This battery comes with an acid pack that the dealer or customer activates when putting the battery in service. WestCo also makes a sealed battery, the 12V14L-B. For extra current and reserve capacity, there is the Odyssey PC 545 gell cell (non-MJ version). This battery must be mounted on its side to fit in the KLR battery box, and you will have to extend one of the power cables. The Big Crank AGM (absorbed glass mat) battery is another possiblity, as is the WestCo.
