Most bike shops sell stuff in a can. One for cleaning, one for treating the the k&n set up. That's the safe way. ........Doesn't stink

Go ahead a clean it with gas/solvent. Then clean it using detergent and HOT water. You will see lots of dirt the solvent missed. I was told this by an old guy many years ago and was a skeptic until I tried it. Now I'm the old guy and passing it on.

Does take longer to dry.

Either way will work, gas/solvent and or spray cleaner and spray conditioner. I like the sprays as they are less messy and wash right out with the water hose. We bought a couple extra new filters off of EBay and keep one oiled an ready to go on the bike, that way the dirty one can dry out and be conditioned and you don't have to wait to ride .... Keep the fresh one in a zip loc baggy.

Previous ride was a 2007 KLR Black/Silver, I miss it..
Looking to get back into KLR's sometime soon.

The first time I cleaned the filter to get out whatever Kawi uses to oil it at the Factory, I just cleaned it in the sink with hot water and dish washing detergant. Did that a few times to get most of the oil out. Then I used the no-toil cleaner. The No-Toil cleaner managed to get the rest of the filter nice and clean.

Since then I have been using the No-Toil cleaner, filter oil and rim grease. Very easy to clean now.

Years ago I used to clean filters with gasoline but I got tired of doing it that way. Tried something new and I like it.

Thanks all, great advice will get to cleaning it this weekend now. I did check out a few web sites and most agree with cleaning with a solvent then hot water detergent then treat with oil and grease, but i did read that solvents like petrol can dissolve the glues in the filter itself ? Might get the proper stuff just in case and having a spare filter sounds like a good idea
