Second Valve Check

Well, we decided to check for any reduction in valve lash since it has almost been 6000 miles since the last time we checked the valves, "where does the time go?". I was expecting actually to have to change a shim or two, but both bikes still maintained maximum gap on the intakes .20mm and only lost a bit on the exhaust valves gapping out at .23mm. So we buttoned them back up and are ready for mucho riding again. We did notice my fairly new rear Perilli S/T tire is starting to cup .. Have always kept about 36 PSI in it. Only 3500 miles on it.

Previous ride was a 2007 KLR Black/Silver, I miss it..
Looking to get back into KLR's sometime soon.

Glad to hear that ! Valve adjustment on the kaw is a PITA. Inspected my '08 @ 1,300 miles and found all of them tickling the tight spec. Wish I could have known what the clearance was new.

Was able to use one of the shims from my old Z-1 900 that I have kept in my toolbox for the last 30 years. Kind of nostalgic knowing that a part of that Z-1 now lives in my new KLR.

Gray-haired riders donít get that way from pure luck.

It was probably exactly what you found. I checked mine at 1000 miles and they were all down below the mid point towards being tight. At 6000 miles I had to change out all 4 shims.

Here is a shim calculator you can download. It is a great tool, to give you the correct size shim you will need to restore the valves back to maximum gap.

http://www.ironjungle.com/

Click on the IJ software link and you will see the shimcalc download. If you get it loaded let me know and I'll pass on my user id and password so you can get the full use of it.

www.arrowheadmotorsports.com is a great place to get your shims. I have them normally in four days from ordering.

I went ahead and set them at the loose end of the spec. I had already DL'ed ShimCalc but wound up just doing the math (too lazy to go upstairs and use the computer) anyway, it aint rocket science.

Got the rest of the shims I needed from Arrowhead. Fred is a great guy. had them here in 3 days! My local stealership did not have ANY in stock. I asked if I could swap some with the mechanics in the shop and got the "Deer In The Headlights" stare. I wont mention which dealership this was...Sherman Powersports...oops.
