'98 650 project need crank advice!

Bought a '98 for a fun winter project..bike is stripped and almost ready for powder coating...haven't opened the engine up yet, engine runs but bottom end is beat...removed the stator/rotor cover and lots of sliver sludge on the magnets...so here's my question:

Can a 2nd gen crankshaft be used in a '98 gen 1 engine?...searched the web over and no definitive answers.... anyone done this? seems like the crank halves are the only different part # ... anyone?

Welcome to the forum.

I recall there being a similar discussion about this in the the past. Give the Forum Search function a try and maybe give this thread a read. It's the reverse of your question but I didn't have a chance to read all the posts to see if it may answer your question.

They all use the same connecting rod kit, the same primary drive gear, the same cam chain, the same balancer chain, so I'll suggest all the alignment of all other related items is the same.
So I'll suggest, yes.

I just wish they would put a smaller oil inlet or outlet hole into their next 'Up-dated' crankshaft!

I believe that the 87 crankshaft and cases are specific to that year only.

At least the 1987 crankshaft has the 'smaller oil orifice' left-over from the KL600 engines. (28-36 psi main oil pressure)

It needs to be smaller still!

millwright98,
Why do you say the bottom end is 'beat'?

Have you measured the clearance of the bottom rod bearing?

Every higher mileage (motorcycle)/higher hour (ATV) engine that I have ever opened have had magnetic particulate in/on the flywheel magnets.
I'll suggest that most of that particulate is from the transmission and clutch.
One can run at-least 3 magnets in a Stock KLR650.
Drain plug, Front end of oil Filter, Back end of oil Filter.
The Flywheel/Rotor will still attract some magnetic particulate.
Ride safe.
