[QUOTE=millwright98;454...haven't opened the engine up yet, engine runs but bottom end is beat...removed the stator/rotor cover and lots of sliver sludge on the magnets...so here's my question:
Can a 2nd gen crankshaft be used in a '98 gen 1 engine?...searched the web over and no definitive answers.... anyone done this? seems like the crank halves are the only different part # ... anyone?
Why do you say the bottom end is 'beat'?
Have you measured the clearance of the bottom rod bearing?
Every higher mileage (motorcycle)/higher hour (ATV) engine that I have ever opened have had magnetic particulate in/on the flywheel magnets.
I'll suggest that most of that particulate is from the transmission and clutch.
One can run at-least 3 magnets in a Stock KLR650.
Drain plug, Front end of oil Filter, Back end of oil Filter.
The Flywheel/Rotor will still attract some magnetic particulate.
