Issue with 2007 KLR

I had an odd issue with my 2007 Kawasaki KLR-650 the other day:

First the tachometer and odometer stopped working. Speedometer still functions. There is a small gear that supposedly can wear out and I thought that to be the cause.

However, on the same ride about 15 minutes later I noticed the engine getting hotter. How much hotter? I couldn't tell you, because the temp gauge did not budge, but it was hot enough that it was uncomfortable. I probably should have stopped but it was raining and I had "get home-itis." When I did stop at home I noticed the unmistakable odor of fuel.

I'm not even sure where to start, but I'm open to ideas. Outside of dead batteries I have never had ANY issues whatsoever with this bike.

Maybe unrelated coincidental events.

Tachometer is sensitive to constant + 12VDC source; odometer remains completely mechanical.

You might check for topped-off coolant in radiator, and "FULL" level in reservoir.

Fuel odor could come from loose tube on tank vent (visible when seat removed).

I'm with Damocles on this one. They don't sound related at all.

Have you done any recent work on the bike?

Did you notice if the radiator cooling fan came on?
Tach, temp gauge and radiator fan not workng indicate an electrical issue. I say fan not working because the engine got hot. These items are powered from the charging system on a '07. The ignition is powered separately and would be unaffected if the charging system had a fault.
The odometer is driven mechanically in the speedo and is a separate issue.

Here is a link to some Gen1 wiring detail I've developed in case it is useful.

The odometer and tach are not linked, IMO, so can't create a scenario which would link them to a common problem. Am I misreading your post? (not unlikely)

If you have a voltmeter or even test light and would like help in diagnosing, please post back or PM me.

Does the fan operate if you remove the fan switch wire from the radiator switch and touch the wire terminal to the corner of a cylinder head fin? Any ground will do, that's the quickest way I've found to do it.
