hi guys I'm thinking of upgrading the seat on my 07, just wondering what is out there and what my options are

Lot's of options. To name a few: Sargent, Rick Mayer, Corbin, Russell, Seat Concepts, Saddlemen Might and the list goes on. Give the forum search tool or Google a try.

Personally I picked up a used Rick Mayer and really like it but the next guy might not. Unfortunately you can't buy a seat with a 90 day trial that I know of. Until you've spent a few hours on it you won't know if you bought the right one. The Sargent and the Russell Day Long seem to be well accepted.

Saddleman, Corbin, and Sargent, all make seat models. Then there's a number of company's that offer materials to modify the stock seat.

That's what I did as well. Cost me all of maybe $50 in materials and some time. I did buy good quality waterproof vinyl though so that was a bit more than just the regular stuff. Nothing special needed, I used a hack saw blade, scissors and a worn out flapper disc.

I just pulled the cover off my seat, took out what looked like a computer mouse pad, cut a tic-tack-toe pattern in the foam (not to deep). staple or rivet back on tomorrow.
Going to give it a try, wish me luck...

Before you change the seat, here's a homework assignment for you. It will require a couple of hours. Take a couple of soft drinks and some snacks next warm sunny day, and spend the time sitting on a park bench. Study the various butts passing by and decide which look most attractive, then ask which kind of motorcycle seat they prefer. ;-)

As others have said, others' opinions are of little value as to how a seat will work for you during longer rides. Almost any seat, particularly bad ones, can feel fine for a short time.

IME, the best way is to ride others' seats, on your bike, for at least an hour. Another very good approach is to pull the staples on the rear 90% of your seat cover and adjust the foam. A bread knife slices the foam nicely and rubber cement will reattach. IME, the KLR seat is too soft and spongy so I like one which is much firmer.

You are lucky with that statement, He is riding a 2007 Gen1.
And I'll agree the factory Gen1 seat is overly soft, even for my 165 pounds. (That's in riding gear and with tool bag, Tom.)
The Corbin standard is hard and too abrupt on my inner thighs.
The Sargent standard is lower than necessary for my 36 inch legs.

But the Gen2 2008-2014 seat is harsh on my derriere also.
The 2014 and a 1/2 seat or (New Edition) is a little wide for my Off-Road style.
I guess I have to say that I am still searching, after 29 years and counting!
