What to look for when buying used?

Just joined this forum today as I am hoping to soon pick up a KLR soon!
Anyway, I found someone selling a 2005 KLR with 7,500 miles and am meeting them tomorrow to take a look at the bike. What are some things I should look for to make sure the bike has been properly maintained and is running smoothly? Lastly, he has an asking price of $3000, from looking around it sounds a tad expensive but not by much what do you guys think?
Thanks in advance!

Additionally, here is a portion of the ad posted by the seller

"It has tons of practical farkels including protection, heated grips, center stand, 400w stator, LED head/tail lights, Corbin seat, etc. I have completed the 22 cent mod, updated exhaust and did the doohickey. I also addressed the brakes to the best extent I can - new SS lines, rotor, pads and recent bleeding. Newer tires too. "
It also comes with a "pelican black" cargo holder.

Prices vary a lot depending on location, etc. That does seem a little high to me, but I just woke up and math my brain no does.

I'm not super mechanical. The other guys will be more helpful, but, honestly, I'd look it over. Check for leaks. Look for little stuff that might indicate how the bike was treated. That said, aside from obvious stuff, every used vehicle I've purchased has been bought with the gut. I sit and chat for a while and I can usually get a good feel about the owner/bike. Ask about maintenance, shoot the shit, see how he plays it.

Start it up. Make sure it wasn't already warm and he's trying to unload a hard starting bike. Chain and sprockets. Ask about the doo. See if he knows anyone on any of the forums.

Now, I'll let the smart guys talk.

If the plastics are in near new shape etc and it hasn't been beaten to ratshit and you will instantly see this, but with that mileage I doubt very highly it has been, it won't burn oil, check the drain plug for damage as in being hit off rocks etc, loook for a leak there of any kind. He has done most all you would expect to be done to it already and is asking a good price.....like i said IF the plastics are near new this shows to me it wasn't a bush bike or been hit etc or laid down hard, then i would snap it up....offer $2500 and go fro there, hard to find a clean GEN I now a days and many fetch $4000 up here now with that type of paperwork.

You an decide if it's worth the money and if you got a good deal, by the way your gut feels, just do not tell anyone what you actually paid and they can't say you got ripped off....as they always do it seems....if you're happy that is all that matters IMHO.

Now go buy that bke before someone else does. I know someone up here would buy it in a heartbeat for the asking price!

Doh, I missed the farkle list the first time. Sounds like a steal! And sounds like someone who knew what they were doing.

Its not even broken in yet. $3K for a little used bike with farkles. Buy it! Nibble him down if you can though just for practice sake.

This deal is is fair to both sides.
Grab n' go if it runs and all the obvious parts are intact.

11 years old with that few miles says it's babied and you are getting
a great steal, or something HUGE is wrong and it's been garaged.

A rip around the block will tell you what you need to know.
Hopefully you can ride for a few minutes to go up and down thru
the gears, try a panic stop or two, blow the horn, check the temp
needle, etc.

(I have given sellers my car keys to hold as collateral during
the test ride.)

Not an issue on a 2005 probably, but if you were looking at a newer bike I would also inquire or do a lien check. Mine had a lien on it when I was purchasing it, but the seller paid if off and showed me a receipt before I completed the purchase. Hung up the sale for a week or two, but saved me a nasty surprise if he hadn't paid it off! Lol

Yeah a deal like that needs to be jumped on quickly. Nothing wrong with giving him a c note to hold it for you.
