KLR Won't Start, Battery "sparking" when I try to turn it over

Hi Everyone! New to the forum. I have a 1988 (!) KLR. It normally runs great, but not now! After it a few times, waking it up from a long winter nap, it is now refusing to start. When I press the ignition button, the power zaps out. I've plugged it into a charger and when I try to start it with the charger on, it literally sparks and I lose all battery power. If I unhook, then rehook the battery charger, I will get the headlight again, with battery power, but the same thing then happens again when I try to start it.
I have not tried to pop the clutch, which is the next "test" to see if I can just get it going. Nobody is up yet to help me push! If anyone has any ideas, please share!
Best,
Andy

HA! Thank you. Cleaned the posts and started right up. I may have just cleared the way for future problems/projects but appreciate the suggestion, it worked! Thank you.
