Needs a Motor Swap

I have an early 2000s klr650. I've been looking at motors to replace the blown one. I have been told that any klr650 motor is interchangeable. Can anyone shed better light on this? Are all original wiring and computer components ok to use with a newer motor or do I have to change a bunch of stuff? I found a real nice 2012 at a great price if it will work.

Thanks in advance

For the most part, the motors are interchangeable.

The electrical system was changed in 2008 when the Gen 2 was introduced. To use the 2012 motor you will need to use the generator cover, with coil, on the 2012 motor. Not a real complicated swap and probably a good idea if the 2012 is a very good deal.

Otherwise, stick with a pre-2008 motor.

Under no circumstances should you use a 2008 or 2009 motor unless it is given to you. Too many issues with oil burning on the '08s and early '09s. It just not worth it unless you really want to go to the trouble and expense of fitting big-bore kit.

What blew on your motor?

.....also be aware of the two pce balancer sprockets and other changes on the pre '96 engines. .....any engine will fit and work but the easiest and best swap for you is '96 - 2007
