Lean Idle problem

I searched and read postings by those with the same problem. Won't run without choke, ran fine last time parked about a month ago. I followed instructions given by others here and changed the gas, removed the carb, sprayed and blew out passages and jets, removed "tamper" plug from idle jet etc. I also added a healthy dose of Seafoam to the tank. It will finally idle, but I attribute that mostly to the factory setting on idle mixture was 1 turn from soft seat, I backed it to 2 turns.

I did not add washers to the main as I want to be sure the idle is OK first. While it does idle, it is not as good as it was. Does anyone believe it may improve after the Seafoamed gas has a chance to soak in? I road about 20 miles after completing all the above. Idle is still not smooth and I get some popping on decel at low revs. Runs great above idle. I could not find any vacuum leaks. It runs like it is still lean at idle. Further suggestions? If it matters, mine is an 06 with 3100 miles.

Thanks all!

Oh, and for the .22 mod, where can I buy the #4 stainless washers?

Kirk

It sounds like you still have possibly some blockage in the idle jet circuit, but also another item you need to check is the air cut off valve diaphragm on the side of the carb. This valve is to help richen the fuel when you let off the throttle to coast or idle, reducing the popping and or backfiring thru the exhaust from being too lean.
As for the washers, I picked up mine from the local ACE hardware store.

It sounds like your doing everything right. I know several other guys in here have had similar situations and hope they will chime in with some experience.

Good luck with it. Don't let it get you discouraged. It usually ends up being something simple.

Thanks, I hadn't thought of checking the diaphram. I'll do it next weekend when installing the washers.

THANK YOU - THANK YOU - THANK YOU
My 06 runs better than it has ever run in the past. I did the washer mod to the carb needle, ran some Seafoam through the tank and removed the tamper plug for idle mixture. I set the idle mix at 2.5 turns, reassembled and took a ride. What a difference! Bike starts and idles perfectly, no decel popping. One note, it took a while to actually find the washer mod instructions. it would make a good topic for a sticky.

My bad, I should have posted this site... Give it a look over for other excellent mods, IE: clutch and kickstand safety bypasses:
