Another MacGyver Gen 1 Dash

I made a Dash with: A Cooling Fan Over-Ride Switch, A 12V Accessory (Cigarette Lighter) Plug, An Alternator Output Ammeter, A System Voltmeter and a Dual USB Plug.

Hope this post helps anyone attempting something like this.

The template is attached (which I acquired on either this or another BB) resize so the square when printed in 1" X 1" and it will work. The Dash Panel as well as the Mounting Tabs are made from Sheet Metal. This was primed and painted flat black except the face of the dash which is in a wrinkle finish black. The Marine Grade: Switch, Plugs and Volt/Ammeter were all acquired (cheaply) via Amazon. There is no more than about $30.00 total invested in this.

The dimensions of the Mounting Tabs are shown in one picture.

The modifications made to the Wind Screen in order to accommodate the above Mounting Tabs are shown and should be self-explanatory. These modification were made with a hand file.

The fasteners are all metric 5mm X 1.0 button head screws with allen head fittings.

Included is a wiring diagram of how this is connected to the bike.

If any questions? Feel free to shoot me a PM.

LOL . . . I just bought it. The P.O. ran it low on oil. Relatively low cost salvage and restoration. Almost off of Life Support!

That's a nice looking mod. I like the volt/ammeter but I wouldn't have any use for a cigar lighter The USB connector would be useful for leaving my phone charging when looking at Sygic installed on my smart phone, which now fits under the plastic of my new tank bag.
What I would find useful would be to fit a digital clock and ambient air temperature gauge.

James.

Mine has only 11400K since buying it new in 1988. Mind you, it's been garaged for the last 18 years or so

yeah a clock would be top notch! I'm about to print out the template now. I was curious about the mounting holes placement, the template just has slots on it.

I have it wired to read the output of the charging system. Mostly because it's a KLR and frankly, I'm a cheap SOB when it comes to the KLR. To get an Ammeter that could handle the draw of the cranking motor, I'd have to spend way more than the ~$15 that I did for this Volt/Ammeter. Also any Ammeter that could read the cranking motor's current draw would require a bit of other nonsense to minimize any voltage drops and/or space for a shunt, etc., etc. So yes, it only reads + current (the way I have it wired on the ground side of the rectifier/regulator), but as long as I'm not seeing anything close to approximately 15 amperes and the voltage runs between 12.6 and 16 volts, at anything above an idle; I'm good to go. Now, all that said, ya gotta bear in mind that the way the charging system works on a KLR (and a lot of other motorcycles as well); the current reading is as much as tachometer as it is an indication of the health of the bikes electrical system. But mostly, the reasons for installing these meters is that it was A.) fun to build, B.) it makes for a bit of eye candy activity on the dash when I get bored and C.) it's a conversation piece . . . . LOL

Red face

Great approach, I made one and attached it to the triple-tree mounting bolts. I still need to waterproof it a touch. Has water been a problem on yours?
