KLR giving off fumes in garage

Hello All,

I just bought my KLR a month ago and I notice it gives of fuel fumes. (i.e. my garage smells like gasoline and if I stick my nose near the carburator, I smell fuel fumes). My other bike (a Kawi ZR-7s also carburated) does not. Other than that, my 1997 KLR is running great. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is wrong or could this be considered normal?

Any input is much appreciated.

Have you pulled the air cleaner out to see if it is gas-soaked?

I'm not sure what would cause the gas smell if there's no obvious leak.

Nope, no gas on the airfilter. I turned off the petcock before bringing it into the garage two days ago and it seems better. I'm not sure why though since it is supposed to be a vacuum activated unit.

My best guess is that somewhere between where the petcock attaches to the tank and where the carb attaches to the intake manifold, there is a very slow leak. This would be a leak that evaporates as fast as it comes out, so you smell fuel but can't see it. Look really hard for damps spots along the fuel line and on the bowl of the carb.

I had a leak like that once and the only way I even knew about it (the bike lives outside) was a couple of drip marks on the engine case that showed up in the dust left by 70 miles of dirt road. Before that trip the gas was dripping onthe engine case and evaporating before I noticed it.

I find if the fuel tank is full and it is hot outside the fuel actual percolates in the tank. Fumes would be coming off of the vent and you smell that.
