Aussie 2003 KLR daily commuter/occasional adventure bike mods on a budget!

Accessories for gen 1 klrís are a little thin on the ground in Australia unless you are paying top dollar to get them in to the country or getting bent over by the local adventure motorbike suppliers. And I didnít want to spend a couple of thou on aftermarket mods on a bike that only cost me $1000 dollars to start with so I have decided to manufacture/modify a few bits myself.

First off is the windscreen. I havenít been able to find a local supplier for a taller windscreen and sourcing one overseas would cost between $200-350 if I can even get them to post.
eBay solution...$20 polycarbonate windscreen, saw, sandpaper, drill and a heat gun. Still needs a few small tweaks and Iíll put a brace strip around the bad to stiffen it up but Iím pretty happy with the results.
The next project I am working on is making a center stand and while I have the welder in hand I am toying with idea of making some pivot pegs.
Let me know what you think and/or some other worthwhile mods.
Iíll also be doing the ĎMC modí this weekend too. Will keep you posted on the results.

Looks like you've found a new source of income. IF there are enough Gen1 bikes in Oz (to start with!), you can make money with this. Streamline the production a little, get some better tools (to cut on time needed), drop some advertising, start making them for other bikes too. Advertise (in the beginning) "two-three" weeks for delivery (or as long as it takes you to make it!). Don't quit your "day job" yet! Make these in your spare time, and advertise accordingly. Once the orders pour in (and you get too busy), quit your "day job", rent a building, hire two guys to make them (you supervise, do accounting, advertising,......) got yourself a nice business!

Five-six years of that,.......sell the business, and do something else (another business, another idea), or.....find a struggling business, figure out why they are struggling, buy it, change it around, double (or triple!) the production, and ....sell it (well, that's what I did, and it works!), me.

The 'MC Mod' has been reported to not work as well on the Gen 1 as it does on the Gen 2. So as long as you are prepared to un-do it, go for it.

I'll assume that you are going to measure your valve tappet clearances and adjust to the upper end of specs as needed.

Modify at "YOUR OWN RISK"!

Still riding my 1987 KL650-A1. 85,000+ miles & counting
